Thanks to Jason May, there were SO many great signed pre-war cards in REA last night. I was basically shut out on all of them -- except this pair of signed CJs, which are gorgeous IMHO.
I would love to see whether any board members came away with any of the other signed cards, especially the Goudey or T206 cards. I believe the amount paid for the signed Goudey Ruth (Green) -- $110,000 without the BP -- is the most ever paid for an autographed baseball card. Amazing -- and congratulations Jason! ![]()

Not a signed card but I'm happy with this handcut e92 Wagner I picked up. Love the crazy oversized borders!
Was the underbidder on the Baseball Bats Wagner so congrats to whoever picked that card up! PS...happy to work with someone needing either of the Planks pictured. I just really wanted the Wagner so both Planks will probably be placed on BST once they arrive. Screen Shot 2018-10-29 at 10.20.15 AM.jpg |

The sheer number of autographed cards was breathtaking. Always liked Charlie Root and was happy my bid survived the crazy evening.
“Ruth most certainly did not call his home run in that game,” said Root years later. “I ought to know. I was there.” Root claimed that he would never have allowed Ruth to show him up without retaliating: “I’d have put one in his ear and knocked him on his ass.” (from SABR bio) |

I can't believe I missed lot 1868 Russ Van Atta. I've been looking for a low grade signed card like that for years and completely missed it!

Thanks for starting this thread Paul! Congrats to everyone who won! Amazing signed cards guys. I was just amazed at seeing all those 1933 Goudeys signed. Unbelievable!
Does anyone know if the gentleman (who got players to sign when in town) was the batboy for the Tigers 33’-35’ is still living? How long ago did Jason make that deal? I would be interested in hearing any details on that? Many of those Goudeys only have 1-2 examples signed known in the PSA/DNA population report. With regards to the 33’ signed Goudeys what was the consensus on prices? |

![]() I just want to add that I have a ball signed by the Cubs third baseman that day. On it he wrote " Babe Ruth did not call his HR in '32 WS. Woody English. I was there." Last edited by Sean; 10-29-2018 at 05:36 PM. |

It’s great to see so many of these cards end up in the collections of my fellow board members. The Detroit ball boy left the Goudeys in a cigar box in the attic of his boyhood home where they were discovered in late 2014. I flew to Detroit on Valentines Day 2015 to purchase the collection.
I think all the Hall of Fame cards sold for at or above what I expected, with many selling for much more. The commons were a little disappointing, but there are only a handful of people working on that set so it isn’t terribly surprising that once I was removed from the market the prices would suffer. I purchased this Babe Ruth ball with part of my winnings. It’s signed by Lew Fonseca also but is displays as a single signed. It was a lot of fun compiling this collection, but it was also a lot of fun watching the auction unfold. I never collected for profit, but it’s a nice bonus that I made a significant profit on these. I’m looking forward to continuing my collection with a little more focus. Thank you again to everyone who bid. Jason |

Probably paid more than I should but I got the collection of 31 AB backed Cards. Excited to get them as AB backs are cool. 5 Cubbies including Kroh. Can’t wait to get them.

Totally agree. That may be the best first post ever. Congrats Curious George - amazing card.
Personally, I think the 33 Goudey Ruth auto was a relative steal (but the auto not the card). I am not an auto guy, but I must admit that I looked at the Speaker more than once. That is amazing too. Congrats to all |

I picked up 7 non-HOFers from Jason May’s signed ‘33 set. I’m sorry to see that set broken up, but also happy to see so many of the key cards were picked up by Net54 folks.

Congrats to all the winners and to Jason for a banner day. I am very happy he did not have any 34 goudeys I needed as I am pretty sure my wife would have divorced me for bidding.

Great REA Pickup’s! I always liked the 1933 Goudey Bob Burke card in general and when I saw a signed Burke I was excited. Got it for my max bid! Bob Burke threw a no-hitter on August 8, 1931. A 5-0 win over the Red Sox! I believe one of only two Washington Senators to do so? The other Walter Johnson. Was there any other Senators to throw a no-hitter??
