So I picked this up the other day. I like Anson and thought it was cool. I did a bit of research when i got it and if I am not mistaken this is a Bain photo of Anson. How do I now if its a type 1 or not? Just curious.
Thanks for any info. (I'm attaching what I found with the photo too) |

You can see part of the etched number at the top which would indicate it is most likely off Bain's negative.

Yeah I saw that too along with the backwards Anson sketched in at the bottom by the wicker chair.
It's also a silver gelatin photo which I tried to show in the second photo I took. So does it make it a type 1 photo? It's a very cool image and I didn't pay much for it so I'm happy either way. |

Not 100% but highly likely. PSA pretty much wont assign a type to mounted photographs anymore even if its pretty obvious that the photos are "Type 1". I think its a corporate rule or something. Anyways, it all comes down to clarity because a duplicate negative photo would still have the Bain marks potentially, they would just also not be as clear as they should be. A high res scan should do the trick since you already have a high res scan of the negative from Bain to compare it to.

Having held it in hand, I believe it to be a Type 1 affixed to a mount.

Is the masking on the photo or in the photo? It is a bit hard to tell.

It's the paint that they used to do in post production at newspapers. So its added to the photo after the photo was printed.

Yes, I do know that. It is called masking in photo terms. I have seen photos masked on the emulsion and photos of photos that were already masked. I was not able to tell by the photos provided if it was in or on the photo.
