Okay -
So you all were able to help me determine the identity of a player on the ‘55 Salem Rebels recently (not Cepeda) and I want to do the same exercise now with a photo I have owned for a number of years with the understanding that it pictures Jim Bottomley. There is only one individual who remotely resembles him. Problem is, the photo clearly says this is the 1921 Sioux City team and baseball-reference suggests he only played with the team in 1920. Let’s see if we can figure out who is pictured if it isn’t Bottomley. Here’s the photo: ![]() Here’s the mystery man: ![]()

ding, ding, ding. Looks like we have a winner...you can see the resemblance, but it certainly appears that my mystery man is, quite unfortunately, John Russell. On the bright side, Mr. Russell did have 90 MLB innings pitched and 2 wins, both of which are infinitely more than Bottomley had at the MLB level!!
Thanks (but no thanks) to Don for correctly identifying this Sioux City player.
