I'm putting together a PC, like many others probably, of HoFers. For HoFers who played in the Pre-War era, I'm doing any of their playing-days cards. For Post-War HoFers (up until 1979), I'm doing their last card. Then for 1980+, the HoFer's RCs.
This brings up a challenging dilemma when it comes to some of the bigger names for Pre-War, because their cards get pricey. Cobb and Honus have surprisingly "affordable" cards (the " " mean I need to save a bit), but Shoeless Joe's cards seem to be unobtainable for my income. I'm considering the 1913 T200 Fatima Cleveland Indians team card (I'm a diehard Tribe fan; BEAT BOSTON), and think I can "cheat" that to count as a Shoeless Joe card. What are your thoughts? Are there other Shoeless Joe Cards, aside from the Cracker Jack, that is/are affordable (kind of like the 1932 Sanella Ruth)? Let me know your input, please and thank you!

For what most of us consider affordable- a mid grade 1940 Play Ball or a strip card are options

Looking at what the Fatima seems to go for, I could get a low grade one for $200-300. I'd prefer to spend around that or less, but pretty much anything less than or around $750 is my budget.

Not a playing-days card though. That's the only issue there.

It all depends upon your definition of affordable, but either the W514 strip card or one of the game cards (National Game or Tom Barker, which both share the same image) or the Polo Grounds issue are the only other 'sensibly' priced options besides the T200. Still a lower end example in these sets would probably run you $500 to $1000. My long standing preference is either the National Game or Tom Barker (example shown)...in my opinion they are very attractive images.

I don't understand the dilemma. Joe Jackson is not in the HOF.

Look at low to midgrade National Game or Tom Barker or Polo Grounds.

Very true. But he's a lot like Pete Rose in my eyes. Should be a HoFer.

Another low budget possibility is the T202 Lord Catches his Man card, which this board was instrumental in discovering and determining that the middle action panel pictures Joe Jackson sliding. A low condition one just ended on ebay for $110.00

Another option is an M101-2, not a card but a larger news supplement from a popular and well respected set. You can get one of those in pretty decent shape for around your stated budget limit. Pretty early in Shoeless Joe's career too.

The Barker game card seems to be the most affordable issue of Joe in his playing days, but many collectors shy away from them because, like postcards, they are not true baseball cards. For my money, the most affordable prewar era baseball card of Joe Jackson is the "T202 Lord Catches His Man" featuring Shoeless Joe being tagged out at third base in the center panel.

I am a big fan of the B-18 Blankets, and you can pick up a nice one within your budget.

This is the card that Brian and Rob recommend. The card is about Lord and Tannehill, and features Lord tagging out a baserunner. The runner is Shoeless Joe Jackson.
I recall that I paid around $450 for this card. scan0001.jpg |

The thread discussing this card is an example of the Board at its best. Outstanding research by a number of members.

The ultimate low budget alternative would be just the center panel. I'm not sure what the going rate would be, but a couple of years ago (which was after sliding Joe had been identified) I was able to snag one for $10.00 Brian |

Even though the OP doesn't care for the game card angle I think it's a good one. Great cards and great prices, relatively speaking.
