I was at an antique/flea market at the state fairgrounds today and was relatively excited to pick up a handful of arm and hammer bird cards just like the ones my mom gave to me that she collected as a child in the 40's for a buck each.
Then I saw this! It was in a unlocked display box with a bunch of lew alcindor cards and to the left was a bunch of old boxing photos local to mn. My heart started beating faster. The guy said it came out of a scrapbook...and he showed me some of the other items from the same scrapbook...a large ad for a college baseball game...but it was period 1915 or so...and a bunch of old basketball game photos as well. His asking price was very reasonable for what it is. I made an offer...he countered. I could tell it was real but was concerned it may be trimmed. But it came from a scrapbook...so not likely trimmed I thought. sure it has a little back damage...but the front is suh-weet!!!! What do you guys think? Thanks guys I appreciate the kind words. Today was a mighty fine day here in St. Paul... Sunny and in the 80s... perfect droptop weather!! And this strike of luck... This stuff never happens to me!!!
I soaked the card in somewhat hot water in a rectangular glass Tupperware. The small piece of paper came off in seconds. When the water cooled I refilled with hot water and after about an hour it looked to me like the bigger piece of paper was starting to release. I filled a little syringe with water and gently blew the water over the paper and it just flew off. I removed the card and Pressed in between some coffee filters to remove water. I then placed in between some more coffee filters in a screw down for one hour. After one hour I changed the coffee filters and re-placed in screw down. After 24 hours I will take it out and see if it is dry . If not I will place in new coffee filters and return to screw down Until dry. Last edited by ullmandds; 04-17-2016 at 09:34 PM. |

Once complete, let us know if the process helped lighten the paper discoloration too. I'm interested in experimenting with some of my really bad caramel stained examples

Pete...congratulations! Definitely an incredible, outside the regular card carousel score.
A suggestion: If by chance you saved the paper that floated off, perhaps you can auction it off here on Net54. It would probably be the closest chance some of us would ever get to owning a Walter Johnson Cracker Jack card. Brian |

Good job Pete. You have made several posts in the past pertaining altered T206s. I'm just curious, How does this card differ from those accusations? You actually wash away paper waste? How in the World is submitting cards in a wash not considered altered?? Is this not deceitful? Submerging cards in water and not telling....

"Tried this on you" kevin...meaning what if a card in my collection was at some point soaked in a bath to remove residue or stain. OMG...life would end! All the high grade bullshit you collect...and you don't think any of that crap has been altered? Much more than a soaking i'd imagine at times?
And I broadcast the whole process on here...so yes...I guess I'm really trying to pull a fast one here. |

You're right Dave. What I don't understand is someone submerging a 100 yr old card in water and not calling that alteration. Regardless of the circumstances, it's altered, right?....This is especially by someone that constantly complains about altered cards from some of the really big AH's and grading companies, what's the difference???....I don't get it....

it has been discussed ad nauseum what people consider acceptable regarding soaking and other alterations. Most...myself included feel that most high grade cards in the hobby today were at one time likely in albums and soaked for removal.
I do not care if a card has been soaked...its undetectable and the card is improved. If you don't like soaking...good for you. And if you don't get what the difference between soaking and trimming is...then you're an idiot! |

So a high grade card that has been soaked never leaves water stains or other marks? You implied in a previous post about some of my high grade cards likely having some issues with this tampering. Can you explain? Can you show me? I doubt it......
