I really showed my ignorance earlier today. I made a post about a NY Natl card that looked weird. I said the buttons didn't match and the NY was real low. Looked like two cards spliced together.
Anyway, sitting on the porch and relaxing tonight, I was flipping through my binder. I came across two NY Natl cards, and they are the same way. So, what is the story of the cards (uniforms)? They seem really against the grain with the others of that time. Anyone have any info on these? I realize I could Google or Bing it, but the forum is for personal interaction. I rather be educated here than on Google anyway. Here are my two. (Fast scan that cut off the top/bottoms). Thanks for any input (besides Jimmy is a Loser). ![]() ![]() |

I believe both players are wearing team sweaters on the cards; similar to today's warmup jackets. Also, if you line up the cards with the players' shoulders equal, the buttons will line up. Also, it appears that the player on the left (red background) has the collar of his sweater down (on the right), while the other player's collar is up (on the right).

Besides your two (Doyle and Murray), there are 7 more Giants sweater guys that were printed in the 460-only Series of the T206 set......

I also thought those sweaters looked weird when I first saw some of the T206s. One of those crazy styles they used to wear back in the early 1900s.
Here's a cool shot of Matty wearing his sweater, plus some other team sweaters from the time period (and earlier)... (also a McGraw from the collection) Last edited by CW; 11-16-2015 at 07:59 PM. |

I like the NY sweater cards for the fact that they are historically accurate and the artist/printers didn't paint their own version on the player's uniforms.

Where baseball players just angry all the time back then? You would think at least one would smile?

Yep, it's a sweater with a buttoned flap.

I always assumed the images were spliced together. Instead it's the sweater design. Maybe the top three buttons were easily unbuttoned, and the player could remove the sweater via the "over the head method"?

Jimmy, another difference I see with the sweaters of the 2 cards you show is that the middle button is buttoned for the player on the left, whereas the middle button is unbuttoned for the player on the right, which makes his sweater look kinda distorted to me.
