December Pick Ups

A couple of minutes ago I picked up this 1971 NL Season Pass for My 1971 Pirates ticket collection. Does anyone know if PSA would change the slip? If so what would be the fee for that service? Nothing against Fergie but it would fit better for my collection if it read something like; valid for 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates NL Champions 97-65. The original owner of the pass was an interesting person as well.

Here's my December pickup so far, a 1930 Cardinals home scorecard. I now have every year from 2014 back thru 1927 except for a 1934. So I was thrilled to acquire any 1930.

I then set about researching it, date, anything of significance, etc. and found it is from Dizzy Dean's major league debut!

He also went 1-3 and scored a run.

Apparently only noted the date from on the front and opponent, and didn't look any deeper into it.

Great find - good luck with 1934.

I have been looking for an affordable crescent mitt with the 'workman' finger style for a while. Finally found one that was priced right and cleanable.

Thanks Alan, Packs. I just happen to have some pics - added to above post.

It was very stiff and heavy prior to cleaning - now it's as soft and supple as any glove I own. The gray 'before' color is very accurate - I was surprised it was so white beneath the dirt.

Also, cleaning the white ones is a tricky process. You can't use any conditioners (oils, etc.) - the spot shown on the finger is the result of accidentally lying the glove in some Lexol. It has to wear away, and it takes a long time, like months or longer.

These two are only 10-15 years apart, but it seems to me there was a drastic change in glove philosophy around 1905. You could literally have gardened in the earlier one.

Great scorecard. I was going through my own Cardinal scorecards earlier this year, doing the research on each game, and discovered I also had the Dizzy Dean debut game. After such a great first effort, I was surprised to see he didn't pitch again in the majors until 1932. Always nice to find a fellow Cardinal scorecard collector. I'm complete back through '26. The older ones before that are just impossible. I'll keep an eye out for a '34. Mine from that year is a 17-3 shellacking of the Cubs. I just picked up a nice companion piece for one of my scorecards from May '58. It was an original wire photo from the recent Yee auction showing Musial in the clubhouse after the game, heading to Chicago with 2,998 hits.

Hi, I had the exact same thoughts (confusion) on why Dean didn't pitch in the majors in '31. I can only assume they felt he needed more seasoning, even though he went 26-10 with a 1.57 ERA in the minors that year.

And yes, any Cards scorecards before 1928 or tough. I was stunned when I I found (and won) a 1916 - so old it was still at Robison Field. I also got lucky on a 1921 that was bundled with other teams in an auction and barely mentioned. If you'd care to see my collection, see my link in my signature and go to the scorecards page.

Finally, appreciate any help on the '34! I'll keep you in mind if I encounter any I think you may be interested in.

As good as Dean was, the Cardinals fielded a pretty terrific starting pitching staff in 1931. Look at their stats, as this was a tough pitching rotation to crack. Look at the ERA's and W-L records, FWIW... Jesse Haines had an off year in terms of wins and losses, but hell, he was a HOFer in the making

I am very fortunate and to add this Balfour Trophy to my Chisox collection. It is the 1967 Chicago Player of the Year award given by the Chicago Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America and presented by Richard Dozier, Chicago Tribune on 1/14/68 at the 28th Diamond Dinner.

Very nice... I was thinking of pulling the trigger on that color study. I also love that image. I have the "BAM" book and picket up the original, Type 1 photo a couple months ago. It is one of his most iconic portraits for sure. Scott, that Cobb is the bomb too. Well done.

Scott - I think your 'Mike Scott no-hitter ball' post sent some good acquisition vibes flowing my way. After responding to your post earlier, I went out Christmas shopping and found a $1,200 pool cue for $18 in an antique store. It's not baseball, but it's the kind of find that allows me to keep selling vintage baseball stuff for a living.

It's awesome to find a genuine bargain once in a while, because it kind of offsets paying too much For other "must haves".

There are definitely great deals out there if you have specialized knowledge and know the market, FWIW.
