So recently I noticed that on some, but not all, Sweet Caporal 350-460 subject series backs, there is a border type design that covers the Factory No. 30 stamp, and has factory N0. 42 written underneath. Im assuming there is a pretty straightforward answer, but I was just curious as to what the story is behind this?

It's an overstamp. Read all about it here: http://www.t206museum.com/page/knowledge_7.html

Good question. The short answer is that these cards were originally intended to be inserted into (probably 10-count) Sweet Caporal cigarette packs and distributed from Factory 30 in New York, but the American Tobacco Company (ATC) decided instead to package and distribute them (probably based on supply and demand considerations) from Factory 42 in North Carolina. So ATC instructed the American Lithographic Company (ALC) to strike-out the Factory 30 N.Y. designation and replace it with a Factory 42, N.C. designation.
