The following is a piece I put together on James "Tip" O'Neill. The right-handed pitcher/outfielder major league ball from 1883-1892, and in 1887 put together an offensive season for the ages.

Very cool story. I was always curious about him. Wasn't his average much higher at the time (based on the way it was calculated)?

In 1887 baseball chose to count Walks as both hits and at-bats. As a general rule though, most baseball encyclopedia/database sources use the standard/current method of calculation. The .435 O'Neill posted was his true batting average based on current standards.
