For my Monster from his slab, began to quip

Slab crackers everywhere started to arrive
Joining in the chorus with the “Flip-Kicker Five”

They played the smash, they played the monster mash
Their flips were trash. It was a forum bash
They played the mash, it had caught on in a flash

When out of his coffin, the foreman did arrive
Seemingly distraught by the “Flip-Kicker Five”
He opened his lid and uttered from his lips
“What ever happened to my Green Bordered Flips?”

So now they’re back, the flips with panache
Take out the trash, it was a forum smash
We told our stash, who caught on in a flash
No further bash, no further monster mash

I don't know the answer but that won't stop me from answering.

I always assumed that since the cards are stored upright, having the pertinent information on the top of the front allows you to identify the card as you "flip" through you collection. At least that is why in my world.

Best guess here is that the term is a holdover from the coin world. The next generation of coin holders after the stapled cardboard 2x2s was the clear plastic "flip." This is a 4x2 jobber with a pocket on each side. (Imagine adjacent pockets cut from a 9-pocket page.) One pocket holds the coin and the other a small piece of paper or card with pertinent information (date, condition, etc.). You fold the flip in half to get it back to the 2x2 size.

So why is the coin thing called a flip? Because you flip it open to see the reverse side of the coin. Soon the term "flip" was used to refer to either the holder itself or the paper insert. PSA started out in life as a subsidiary of the coin grading service PCGS, and the terminology transferred easily.
