Last Saturday I attended a really interesting auction at a nearby Auction house here in Pennsy. This auction regularly features Revolutionary War stuff, early Colonial Furniture,
signed Presidential Documents, etc. Recently, a local resident consigned his near complete T206 set. All 520 cards were raw. The majority of them were Vg-Ex to Ex condition. Each card in this set was individually sold....and, bidding was quite brisk. FYI....the following lists the major cards and the $$$$ realized in the bidding............ Demmitt (St Lo) ........ 3700 O'Hara (St Lo) .......... 1025 (crease) Cobb (red) ............... 2200 Cobb (green) ............ 1600 Cobb (bat on) ............ 950 Cobb (bat off) ............ 925 Johnson (portrait) ...... 1050 Johnson (pitching) ....... 450 Matty (portrait) .......... 675 Matty (white cap) ....... 520 Matty (dark cap) ......... 450 CYoung (portrait) ........ 775 CYoung (glove) ........... 625 CYoung (arm) ............. 425 Elberfeld (por-Wash) .... 800 Dahlen (Brooklyn) ........ 380 Lundgren (Cubs) .......... 250 H. Smith (LENOX) ....... 1400 Other than the Happy Smith with the LENOX back, there were 20 cards with TOLSTOI backs, a Willett with a CYCLE 460 back.......and, most of the other cards were either the usual PIEDMONT's or SWEET CAPORAL's. Except for 10 of the following cards which happen to be tough SWEET CAPORAL 460, Factory 42 cards. I won all 10 of these....and with the Gandil and McGraw (which I already had)....I was able to complete my "Exclusive 12" run with this back. All together, I won 62 cards at this auction (including 7 - HOFer's). ![]() ![]() ![]() . ![]() TED Z |

Nice cards Ted, It looks like you may have the answer to the often debated
question of whether some wst's can be created from storage. It seems like to much of a coincidence that most of the ones you purchased have them. |

Really happy for you! Nice cards, especially the Crandall. Not an easy combo to find. Pat R. The real "coincidence" is why these wst's only appear on the factory 42 version of these 12 player's cards and not on their factory 30 cards. Jantz |

Hey Guys
Fred, Steve, Pete, Barry, Chris, Pat, Patrick, Joe, Jantz....thanks much for your compliments. The T206 auction started at 9 AM. The T206 auction was one of 4 independent auctions being conducted, simultaneously. At high noon....our auctioneer paused our bidding, so we could observe the action regarding the 1863 Civil War document signed by Abe Lincoln. When brisk bidding ended, this document sold for approx. $6000. It was the highlight lot of the day. I hope this auction house gets more Vintage BB cards. They conducted a very professional auction. It was exciting, and I added 62 more T206's to my latest sub-sets. The last time I was at a live auction of BB cards, it was in the early 1990's when I attended Sotheby's....where the "Gretzky" Wagner was auctioned off. Yes, and what a treat! Unfortunately, in the two years that I have been going there that was only the second time they featured baseball cards. The other time they featured cards they were from the 50's and 60's. The reason why they rarely have cards is because it is pretty much an estate auction where they auction off all of the contents of a house. These past three weeks were from one card collecters enormous estate. Another time they had a ton of pins from the 10's and 20's, which was about a year ago.

The prices were pretty high for the southern leaguers, but some were manageable. There were no standout stars or backs like there were at the major league one. I think the only good one besides the southern leaguers was Joe Kelly.

This is a great thread. I know Blaine quite well as he handled the auction of my mother's estate last year after she passed away. Blaine will talk your ear off, but at the same time, every single thing he says is interesting, so I love it. I live in New England now, but my wife and I are hoping to get a long weekend this spring, head down there for a few days, and include an auction with Blaine. He usually has some good oil paintings - though I prefer art on small pieces of cardboard.
It's a shame to see such a great T206 collection that someone really took great care of to be broken up and not passed down within the family, but I guess that's the way it goes. Either the family had no interest in it, or needed the money. It sure paid off for Ted, and I'm jealous I wasn't there to expand my modest collection! |

I was the very last person to cash out at this auction; and, while I was waiting for my wife to arrive to pick me up I had a nice conversation with Blaine.
He certainly is one cool guy....and, with a great sense of humor. He noted that I won quite a number of Tobacco cards. I remarked that I was very pleased with the auction. And especially, these 10 cards.....I showed him 10 of the 12 cards pictured here (minus the McGraw & Gandil, which I already had). I explained to Blaine that the Tobacco advertising backs (Sweet Caporal 460, Factory #42) on these 10 cards are tough to find. Furthermore, finding all 10 cards (that I needed) in the same collection is virtually impos- sible. I certainly was one very happy dude that frigid icy day. . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() John....thanks for posting. TED Z |

I'm not sure I understand, but then there are times when I cannot figure if you are joshing or you are serious. Anyhow, I don't see any evidence of "wst" on 11 of these cards. The back of the Pfeffer card is a mystery to me....as it appears to have black printing under (or over) the red Sweet Caporal print. I don't view this effect as a result of wst....since Sweet Cap backs were not printed with black ink. Perhaps, it was the result of a black ink "prep-to-print" printer's test. Besides you, others here have noted "wst's" on these cards. Therefore, I'm asking anyone here, check out these enlarged scans of the cards, and tell me where you detect hints of wst ? . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks, TED Z |

Pete
I did a lot of research on these 12 players a few years ago. If you search the archives for a thread I started named "A possible T206 sheet", I talked about how these 12 player's cards consistently show a wet sheet transfer on the front of their cards. I believe it occurred during production and I also believe these 12 players were on a sheet together. I also own a few of these 12 player's card with Sweet Caporal 460-42 backs and all of mine have the same wet sheet transfer. I've seen too many over the years to think it happened from storage. This wet sheet transfer would have occurred on other cards and not just the factory 42s if that was the case/cause. I've never seen a McGraw SC factory 30 with this wet sheet transfer, yet almost all of his SC factory 42 cards have it. A few factory 42s do appear without the wet sheet transfer and this was probably because of the way the sheets were stacked. No transfer means that card was either on the bottom or top sheet depending on how the sheets were stacked during production. Jantz |

Pete If there are wst on these cards it was strictly due to printers stacking freshly printed sheets (before the ink had fully dried). Whatever, I have a problem with you, and several guys here, saying they see wst on these cards. Yes, I understand that these subject's have been seen with wst. However, I'm sorry guys....I just don't see any hints of wst on the fronts of these cards. Perhaps, I've seen too many of these cards and they all have become a "blur", or maybe I'm going "blind" ![]() TED Z |

I would like to play. The Tannehill pictured fourth from the left has a Sweet Caporal wet sheet transfer. The third Pfeffer from the left has a Sweet Caporal wet sheet transfer. The first Sheckard from the left has a Sweet Caporal wet sheet transfer. Pretty much the same answers as Pete, except I'd like to add that the third Tannehill from the left has a Piedmont wet sheet transfer. ![]() Did you try to sneak that Piedmont in there on purpose? ![]() Jantz |

I remember about 12 years ago I was in a large meeting. Was sitting about 50 feet from the screen where the slides were being projected. Couldn't believe how bad the presentation was. Turned to the other folks at my table and chuckled to them "do they really expect us to be able to read that size font?" They turned to me and said "yup, its easy to read". Next day, made an appt with the ophthalmologist. They couldn't believe I never wore glasses before. Been wearing them ever since. Huge difference. Shocked at the difference they made. Just a humorous story for all your enjoyment.
