Yes, I am sure that they were given the ring from someone as a consignment and if you read the story it does allude to something like that. A quote from the story:

"Alworth told a store employee who called to demand the money that the ring was stolen, but the couple allegedly went ahead with plans to sell it through SCP Auctions."

Thanks Bob, never read down that far. I've bid and won in SCP and never had an issue, and still will in the future. Bunch of good guys there.
