Last Sundays Antiques Fair Haul

I Went to the monthly Alameda Point Antiques Fair last Sunday and came up with a few things....I don't usually find a whole lot of antique sports stuff there but did OK this time....The first thing I found was a 19th- early 20th century pair of Sandow's exercise Spring Grips in the original tin box...















Since I collect sports tins I'd have been very happy to find just the box....The grips are remarkable...very heavy and well made...Plus folded up under the grips I found an instructional chart poster, and a cloth for polishing the grips....plus another poster for Sandow's Chest Pull. Probably the original owner of the grips also had the chest pull apparatus and mistakenly placed its instructional poster in the wrong box. Everything is in really nice condition...Even the box has most of the bright red printed label intact...Had I found any one of the items by its self I’d have bought it because of the Sandow name…so it was a pretty good find.

Eugen Sandow is called the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding. He had a gym in London and toured the United States with Ziegfeld Follies in the late 19th century doing weightlifting and bodybuilding exhibitions. He was the Arnold Schwarzenegger of his day





The next thing I found was this c1905, 45” x 38” Seagram’s Whiskey advertising poster titled “Joseph E. Seagram’s Queen’s and King’s Plate Winners”. Joseph Seagram was the king of horseracing in Canada in the late 19th century. I think all the horses in the poster were his…. and like any self respecting mogul he had the original painting in his office….I believe Joseph Seagram was renown in the United States horseracing as well.…

The Queen's Plate race is the oldest and most prestigious horserace in Canada. It was started in 1860 by Queen Victoria of England and is held In Toranto in June or July at the Woodbine Racetrack.

The sign has discoloration in the upper area but the graphics are outstanding…The discoloration looks way more pronounced in the photos taken in bright sunlight…Looks much better in person but will still have to be restored…..The price was right and it looks dynamite over my dining table!

Great pickups Carlton! I really like the Spring Grips... Funny, if I remember correctly - there was someone that posted in the "What else do you collect other than baseball" thread that stated they specifically collect vintage hand grips or exercise grips or something like that....

Found out the artist Arthur Henry Hider who did the Seagram's Queen's Plate sign was a huge Canadian artist...That painitng was used on whiskey labels

Here is the link - page 8 post #75 .... Says he collects strong man hand grippers - I thought it was interesting, never heard of anyone specifically collecting those... Not sure if the type you have are exactly what he goes after though????

Hi Carlton, those are awesome and really unique pieces! I particularly like the large advertising poster and will be a perfect candidate for restoration!

Great Sandow piece. You know, he lost a weightlifting contest to a woman. Katie Brumbach, a strongwoman with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus for many years, and Sandow had a lifting contest. She won when she cleared 300# over her head and Sandow could only raise it to chest height. She adopted the stage name "Sandwina" in memory of the occasion. Her son, Ted, was a heavyweight contender in the 1920s.

Watching an episode of "Canadian Pickers" (very similar to the American TV show but up here in Canuck land) and the guys bought a similar horse racing sign at an outdoor fair in Ontario. Paid $600 CAD.

Wow Chris good eye....that's more than similar...that's the same sign...So they got that one at an outdoor fair in Ontario, and I got mine at an outdoor fair in California...Funny thing is I seem to be on Canadian streak of late....just sold a Canadian Cycle and Motor bicycle plaque to an Ontario collector...then bought a Hockey plaque and a C.M. Coolidge print of a dogs playing poker from Ontario....a very rare large early version printed on canvas.
