Sean, I forgot about these. They handed them out at the Astrodome at some point during the 1970 season - we got outfield ones. I still have mine somewhere, but they haven't withstood the test of time as well as yours.

Great question!

In order to make the deadline for the playoffs a team that is in contention will print up playoff and World Series tickets in advance and actually presell these to their season ticket holders. If they get eliminated at any point in the process the extra tickets become what they call "phantom tickets" to games that were never played.

In the old days they had to print them a bit earlier than they do now. In 1969, the first year that the leagues were split into two divisions each, the Astros made their first run at a title, but faded fairly early. My guess is that they were out of contention pretty much right after these were printed.

I would think the Cubs should have had phantom tickets that year also, but I've never seen any.

As a kid, we were totally baffled when they handed us these at the game.
