January 2013 pickups

In the "it doesn't have to be a baseball card to be cool" category comes this very large (11" x 5") and colorful die cut that I picked up from Lew Lipset's great sale page on his website. Note the "Base Ball Match This Afternoon / Polo Grounds / New York vs. Cleveland" mock advertising. The condition is extraordinary for a piece so delicate.

WM.C. Greene 1940's Berra, 1947 Al Rosen minor league, 1961 Santo, 1957 Nellie Fox, and the 1949 Campanella were picked up the end of December. For some reason I have struggled to find a nice photo of Santo so I am very pleased with this one. I try to limit myself to photos of members of the HOF but as a tribe fan I couldn't resist the early Rosen. The last photo features Oscar Charleston, King Tut, and Connie Morgan of the 1954 Clowns. It is my first pick up of 2013 and I couldn't be happier! I had planned on limiting my photo purchases this year but this photo is like that last great golf shot that keeps you coming back for more punishment.

Brian, Very cool diecut….a very idealistic depiction of a trolley….I know someone who’s very into Victorian and has a framed one of these on his wall….That trolley car is so fun looking I’d definitely want to ride up on the top level.…I like the spiral stairs to the top..and the wood slat bench….They need to bring those back horses and all!

I can’t make out all the signage….Visible is “Base Ball Match This Afternoon - Polo Grounds - New York vs. Cleveland”..and along the top “Central Park To”…and I can make out the word “High” along the bottom but it’s blurred after that….Wow…”no smoking”…very pc!

What’s interesting is I searched on the web for surviving horse drawn double decker trolley cars and I started noticing all the images I found were of English ones…I believe most if not all the Victorian die cuts were produced in Europe, I think mainly Germany and England. Maybe New York City had double-decker trolley cars…but maybe not and the card was made in England or Germany for the American market…which was very common in the day. I recall two stories I’ve written involving Victorian die cuts in which I picked up a little on the subject…”Freddy’s Football”…and one on an 1890’s football player die cut. Two German companies who may have produced a die cut like this trolley would have been Ernest Nister and the other being Raphael Tuck and Sons.

The small tigers pin isn't a big deal, but was missing from my collection. The large 1968 pin is veeeery rare. In fact, I don't believe I've seen another. Anyone else seen this size? Both are off ebay.

The Ruth fob is in outstanding condition and the Yankees version is very difficult to find. I'm pleased that the strap is in terrific condition as well. I found it two days ago in an antique mall for a terrific price



I love this Cubs pennant. In particular the heavy rich felt used in the making and the red/blue contrast. Picked this up on ebay.

Ditto Mark. That is the first time I've ever seen that pennant as well. A real beaut for sure. When I saw the pennant I wondered if anyone had ever encountered that particular stadium graphic and crossed bats design for another team? Mike- your right the 68 Tigers Champs pin is a real toughie. Nice addition and kudos on the '51 All-Star pin, great deal. I havn't been very active as of late since my wedding but it makes me feel good to visit here and see gems like these have found homes in world class collections owned by great guys. Everytime I stumble on these on the Bay I think about sending a PM, but it seems you guys are ALWAYS on top of it and never miss 'em. Happy hunting guys.

This is a bat he used in 1930. It is particularly cool because this exact bat is cataloged in the Hillerich bat records for Durocher.

John the fact that they even have covers is a real plus. Nice pick ups. The Record Books are a really nice find, they seem to be a bit tougher to find than the guides.

I've had this for a while, but finally scanned it. It's a 1946 photo, probably autographed in 1946 as well. The photo is in a folder and the non-photo side of the folder is also signed by Ted.

Scored this enormous 18' x 3' heavy canvas banner reading "Baseball Tonight" in painted red letters. The seller (from Mass.) claims the fella they got it from stated it was used at Fenway in the 40's. It's a possibility I guess but, who knows?

The font of the banner looks to be 1940's, or possibly earlier in my mind. Either way, it's a pretty terrific banner. Congrats!

I'm not really sure what to do with it either Mike. I certainly don't have 18 foot of available wall space to hang this thing. So for the time being it will just be rolled and stored away. Hopefully sometime in the near future I have a baseball room big enough to display it properly. And if I find myself sick of seeing it just laying around gathering dust, I'll part ways with it and hopefully make a dollar or two off it

Being that the says "Tonight", whatever venue it hung outside of must of had light. I know all the big league stadiums, sans Wrigley, had lights by the late 1940's. I can only assume that many of the smaller venues that hosted minor league and semi-pro games would of had lights by that time as well. I think 40's-50's is about the right time frame.

June 13th, 1947 was the first night game at Fenway Park, FWIW. Minor league parks and negro league games were played under the lights more than a decade earlier....

Nice Glove! Someday, I would like to find one of those.
For me--I was lucky enough today to pick up this little baseball stamped with the word Midget on it..had some damage on the backside (small rip and insides exposed) to the "canvas" like material. It's smaller than an official ball and much lighter. I am thinking the early 1930's but am no ball expert so any help dating it would be appreciated.
Was signed as photo shows--not perfect but vintage ink and the only sig on the ball..was in a hope chest of an 87 year old woman who had just passed away recently for the last 50 plus years and I believe it belonged originally to her husband who has passed away several years earlier...There were a few other New York/sports items as well but no family members left to tie anything altogether.
Oh, if only this little ball could talk!

Not prewar, but I did pick up this terrific original 8 x 10 1989 action photo of Nolan Ryan that originated from The Sporting News Archive.
Not only do I love all of the key elements of the photo, but it also features the 1989 Ryan game used glove that I own in my personal collection. My glove came directly from Nolan Ryan and I have shown it previously on net54 in a thread where we showed favorite items in our collections. I also have a pair of game used Nike spikes from Ryan's 1989 season (one year style) that he is wearing in this photo as well.

In 1989 Nolan Ryan struck out HOF Rickey Henderson for his 5,000th career strikeout in August, became the oldest player to be the winning pitcher in the All Star Game at age 42, pitched two 1-hitters and became the first player to strike out 300 in a season for the 6th time, besting his own record (now tied with future HOF Randy Johnson).

Second, my father gave me from cleaning out his attic. It was my grandfather's glove and is a Western's G1330, any other info on this such as approx dat etc. would be appreciated.

Picked up this trophy at the antique show yesterday...it was given by Red Grange and the Palace Theatre to the most popular player in Johnsbury, VT...presumably a player on the Johnsbury Academy team. It measures 16.5" tall. And of course I can't find anything in Google about it.
