New to this forum – just joined yesterday as I wanted to learn more about the teams and players of the early 20th Century. You see, I just acquired a set of homemade baseball cards, created between 1900 and the late 1930’s. This is a fascinating project for me, and If it’s OK with the folks on the board here, I would like seek your help cataloging the cards as I look for clues to identify the players and teams and attempt to date the cards. Here is a small sample of the ~ 500 card collection:
Other than this unique set, the majority of my baseball card collection are from the “post Ueberroth” era and probably won’t be of interest or value to any serious collector for another century or two. My modern day collection is primarily focused on the Arizona Diamondbacks as I lived in Phoenix the last 15 years (moved there the same week as the expansion team’s inaugural game). I collected all sorts of “stuff” –baseball cards, ticket stubs, programs, All-Star ballots, promotional flyers, in-seat menus, media guides, field dirt – you name it. But I am venturing out, looking to expand my collection and hoping to learn a few things from the locals experts here. ~ Paula |

Don't know the first three cards. The last 7 are George Cochran, Branch Rickey, George Stallings, Casey Stengel, Mack Wheat (Zach's brother), Christy Mathewson and George Sisler.

Thanks RC -- I had this batch pretty much figured out (the first three are Jim Thorpe, Hugh McMullen, and Mike McNally). But there are hundreds more (about 500 in total) I haven't looked at yet ~ so please keep an eye out if you can help ID 'em.

I think I like the backs of the cards better than the fronts. Looks like some kid used whatever box he could get his hands on. Interesting.

Paula,
Thanks for posting these. Would like to see more. I can't really say they are worth any money to collectors, but they are cool looking. |

I am with Dan on this I love the advertising backs. I also like the amount of effort that this young person was putting into this project that is a really cool find.
