I just learned that the weight of a card is based on what it sells for.
This means a rare card that doesn't come up for auction is weighted
less because of no sales. Now I wonder, do they take down the weight
of a particular card after more and more are graded and they go down
in value. Anybody know what goes here?

Technically, it isn't what a card sells for. It's kind of tit-for-tat but here is what PSA says about the weight of a card in the set:

Within a set, not all cards and tickets have the same value. Sets in the PSA Set Registry are weighted on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the rarest item and 1 being the most common. While it may be in true in some instances that an item may be many times over 10 as rare as the most common item in the set, the Registry keeps the scale simple so that all levels of collectors can compete. Each item within the set is assigned a weight based on the value of the item in NM-MT condition.

Just to comment further on that ..... I am putting together a T206 set in all PSA 4.
There can be 2 cards .... both weighted a 1 in the set registry that are WAAAAAY different in cost. One might sell for an average of $60 and the other may average in the $130 range ..... but they are both weighted a "1".

That is so far from what I was told by PSA and from what I am seeing that
I can't believe it. You would think they would look at their own population report and that would tell them something. What you just said makes sense, and the way it should be but that is not what they are doing. I just entered the following74 Brett0001.jpg This is the earliest card picturing George Brett and was produced in 1974 in the Kansas City Royals team issue.
This is the first one graded by PSA. The reason, .... obviously there are not many around. It is weighted a 2, the reason given. Weight is based on what a card sells for ... None of this one has sold and in fact many have not even seen one, obviously because there aren't many around. There are others in the registry that are few and far between. I just didn't realize the registry is based on sales price.

Maybe you should forward that to PSA. They told me if I could produce
a receipt for the sale of the card they would change the weight. Guess
what I don't know of one that has gone up for sale and I am not selling mine.
This is just one example. There are more. In the scope of things it really
doesn't matter, I was just surprised.

I have a very similar situation with my Johnny Bench set. I have the only graded 1967 Bench team issued postcard which pre-dates his Topps rookie card. It only has a weighting of 1. I have also been told by PSA in the past that the weightings are based on NM-MT card values.

In the player sets in which I participate, no one at PSA ever assigned the weighting, I did. If you are the person to create the original composite for a set, which I've done many times, you also submit what the weightings for each card would be.

I agree with the above posters that its supposed to be based on price in ungraded NM condition, but some of the "tone" above made it out like PSA was coming up with the weightings, which is untrue. Also, after the original composite is put together, if YOU are the person who adds a subsequent card to the composite, you submit the weighting for that card as well.

Its a user-driven weighting system.
