Derek Jeter got his 3256 hit last night.
He is now 1000 hits away from Pete Rose. Does anyone think he has a legimate chance of passing Rose? thanks, john |

That's 167 hits a year for six more years, with no room for any long term injury. Despite a sensational 2012, no.

I don't think he will do it.

Yeah, I can't see it. I really don't think he'd even try and attempt it. I don't think he will want to play with diminishing skills and will want to go out on top.

he will play a few more years and then see how close he is, and i think he will try for it as long as a team wants him on their roster. rose wasnt any younger and breaking the record will mean tens of millions of dollars for him and cement his name in the record books even more. he wants it.

Jeter is 38 and has 3263 hits. Lets say he finishes with 3275.
Rose finished the season at 38 years of age with 3372 hits. Rose played till he was 45 yrs old, accruing 884 hits over a 7 year span after the age of 38 to finish with 4256 hits. Can Jeter average 140 hits over another 7 years to equal Rose's record? Jeter's lowest hit total in a season is 156 in 2003 when he only played 119 games. I say he gets it. But my question is whether he'll be in pinstripes or will it be like Emmitt Smith (NFL rushing record) who played his last years with a different team cuz he wasn't NFL caliber anymore? |

I think it's possible but slim. My guess is that he would reasonably try to play until he's 42, so 4 more years. If he's close to 4000 by then, I think he might play another year to try to get it. Then if after that year, he's near 4100, the record is just strikingly close. He may be tempted. However, if his skills diminish considerably, and he's not close to 4K by 42 (close as within 100 hits), I think he'll just retire.

No chance. His hitting skills are on the decline and diminished as mentioned in all the replies above.
I mean, he is only leading all other major league hitters by 10 hits this year and in is on pace to have a paltry total of 216 hits at seasons end. Stick a fork in him, he's done! |

Yet here's something interesting: when Jeter got his 182nd hit the other day, he became the first 38 year old shortstop to reach that hit total. It would be a nice accomplishment if it occurred on the last day of the season....but he did it with 26 games remaining! So although it's a bit of an obscure achievement, he left all other competition far behind.

Jeter's 3283rd hit ties him with Willie Mays...now that's a pretty big name, and he's still going gangbusters.
