on ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330828124082...84.m1438.l2649 is there anyway this can be proved to be "Joe" Jackson, and not Travis or any other Jackson from the 30's? Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 11-21-2012 at 11:22 AM. |

No way to prove. This one falls into the "wishful thinking" category

Powerized and Oil Tempered on the same logo means it was made in 1933-34, so it was not Joe Jackson of White Sox/A's fame

Looks like Matt (MGHPRO), our resident bat expert here won it for a whopping $979.00!!!, so I wonder if his opinion differs. Look forward to hearing from him.

I would like to hear Matt's idea's on the bat. The bat is marked 36" on the knob which means it is a store bat. The Jackson stamp is off centered from the grain. To me it looks like that was added by someone other than H&B.
and it is a stamped name and not burned Last edited by murphusa; 11-21-2012 at 12:24 PM. |

Although uncommon, there are pro model bats with inch marks on the knob.

Thought I would post this Dave Bushing article on store model vs. pro model. It might not relate to this specific bat, but is quite interesting nonetheless:

to me the wood of the bat does not look like pro model wood.
bat records also do not make sense. I have a bat with the signature of Frank Murphy on it. It is a pro wood bat with no center brand just the name in signature script of Frank Murphy with Trade Mark at the end of the barrel Now there was a Frank Murphy who played MLB in 1901, but that would be pre Wagners endorsement deal. One other Frank Murphy who played minor league baseball in 1914. Problem was he was only a class D player in the Staten Island League, so why would he have an H&B type signature model bat. Makes no sense unless he asked for some to be made and paid for them himself and H&B or who ever gave him a choice of what a bat would cost. A pro bat wood would be this, a store model bat wood be that. So it is possible in this case a Mr Jackson asked for some bats and asked for the store model wood. This would also be the same in the examples in Bushings article. not far fetched Last edited by murphusa; 11-21-2012 at 09:09 PM. |

I did buy it.. My concern was also the off center name stamp.. even some of the individual letters look off- possibly hand stamped. Its very similar to the 125J bat.. I will certainly give more info when I see it in person since the photos weren't the best.

i was pretty much going to say what everyone else has (powerized marking is from the mid-30's, 36" on knob is store model, etc). i'll add, Joe used 40+ ounce bats, this one is 32.
the only possible (but very unlikely) thought here is that it was a barnstorming bat, but i doubt that is the case. nonetheless, it's a cool looking bat, congrats Matt. Last edited by MVSNYC; 11-21-2012 at 09:49 PM. |
