One of my favorite paintings is this one of the Polo Grounds (circa 1950) by the well-known artist, Stevan Dohanos.
This painting is in the Hall of Fame and was also featured on the cover of the April 22, 1950 Saturday Evening Post. Its realistic effect gives me an instant flashback to my youth, when I was at a New York Giants game. ![]() Show us some of your favorite BB related paintings. TED Z |

Great idea for a thread, Ted...........I've always loved creating art, but with a family and a career, there's not enough time in a day to devote to a new project. (......maybe if I decided to give up sleeping?). I completed this Nolan Ryan, oil on canvas, in '99 and had him sign it at a Chicago Sun Times show a couple years later. The Matty and Cobb are large oil on canvas paintings that I purchased from a local sports bar that closed a few years back.....I think they were commissioned by the owner in the late '80's. Maybe someday in the future I can get back into painting.....I'd love that.

I have one piece of original comic art in my collection. Revolutionary comics came out with a Roberto Clemente issue in 1992. Shortly after it was released I contacted the company and purchased this page. It was very reasonable, my only regret is that I didn't buy more of them at the time.

Matt-With talent like yours, I'd stop sleeping or quit my job and commit to baseball painting full time! That is a stunning painting of Ryan, and he must have liked it. You are much better than the (to my mind) over-rated work of Dick Perez.
Great thread, Ted. Cheers, Mike |

I have to admit I would be a bit disappointed if I created something as nice as you did, Matt, and Nolan didn't acknowledge, but I guess he'd probably seen hundreds of painted images in his career. That is one beautiful painting!
Very nice thread - I've always liked picking up original art pieces, especially artwork used in the creation of cards. Anyone else been picking up any of the artwork Upper Deck commissioned for their Masterpieces and other artwork based sets? I really appreciate the talents of some the folks they used for these sets - Chuck Gilles, Ron Stark, Andy Jurinko, Darryl Vlasak, and Arthur Miller to name a few of my favorites. I'll try to post pictures of a few I've picked up. |

I earlier posted some of my older artwork. As many of you may know, my spouse Jennifer Ettinger has been painting baseball images (as well as dogs, cats and whatever else wanders in the door) for the last 18 years. She is fortunate enough to have 22 of her paintings blown up and on display at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver
Here's a shot of the Stadium ![]() ![]() ![]() She's done quite a number of baseball paintings, which can be seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/basebal...7594074775860/ Finally, she's working on a 21 painting commission of New York Yankees. Here's Keeler and Chesbro ![]() ![]()

Thanks Max. I first learned about Dohanos when I saw one of his works on display at the HOF. That one was used for the cover of an October 1952 Satruday Evening Post. I think his work is terrific illustration art.

Corey "Great minds think alike" ![]() Many years ago I saw this painting by Stevan Dohanos in Cooperstown and I searched for a copy of it. Eleven years ago, I acquired this Saturday Evening Post that featured it on its cover. The Polo Grounds enkindle some very fond memory's from my youth........ I saw Bobby Thomson's "shot heard around the world" in the 1951 NL Playoff game. Also, saw Willie Mays' great catch in the 1954 Word Series. And, many more such sweet events. Best regards, TED Z |

It's a rough gig being an artist. It's a lot of sweat equity that in most cases isn't rewarded in the marketplace. Even after you're an established artist, you're always trying to figure out where the next commission or sale will come from (which in some ways is like any other business--however, I don't seem to have to worry about tax miscreants finding me in my business)

After stumbling upon this story a few days ago, I set a snipe hoping to land this cool Gehrig piece, an original "sketch card" by Chris Henderson. 90% of the proceeds went to a great cause, and I got to add some amazing artwork to the collection without breaking the bank. The artist nailed this one, in my opinion, and the detail is amazing for something the size of a standard baseball card. One of the most satisfying purchases I've made in some time. Posted along with the original (Conlon?) photo for comparison.

Truly coincidental...
A 16 year old young lady (whom I have the honor to call my sweet daughter), has turned her art talent towards the Baseball World. Bryanna, has just recently been viewing some of my cards. I showed her a few! I asked her if she thought if she could paint or draw any of them? Without me asking, she found a picture of Lou Gehrig on the net and this is what she did in an afternoon. A Photo and a Scan of Lou... She is Presently working on a few others, an E95 & a Boston Garter Matty. Her work is Just getting better & Better!!!

These are the drawings I did for a card 15 card set Negro league historian Gary Ashwill and I recently did in conjunction with the family of Hall of Famer Pete Hill. Best part about the set for me was illustrating all the different uniforms from the many teams Hill played for in his long career...
