Hello All,
i apologize for not having a scan of my card but i picked up a 1951 Bowman Duke Snider signed card and the dealer said it was signed on the spot in 1951 at the ballpark. Auto looks similar but more "Proper" than "Quick-Handed" like his typical. My question is can some one please post a scan of an early Snider auto of something 49-51-ish so i can verify mine. Thanks and i should have a scan of mine within a couple days. Danny

Here's mine.
It's signed pretty early. Sorry, I don't like yours. As a qualification, I will say that I am unfamiliar whether or not he had a different signature at the very beginning of his career ![]() Best, Mark

I've seen a couple of early cuts that were similiar to yours, although this one doesn't seem to have quite the slant of a lefty that he usually had.

What is it that people aren't liking about this auto? It looks awfully similar to the other example to my eye. The 1st sig was obviously "squished" to fit inside the white uniform space, but the letter formations, flow and loose dotting of the "i" look pretty consistent to me. If you drop the 2nd auto in Photoshop and compress it side to side, it looks an awful lot like the first one to me (with the exception of the S and D being a little more elaborate).

To me it's the vertical vs very left slant to the letters, and the huge vs small top lop on the S.

I actually think it is ok. If you look at any of his signature model bats, the autograph matches up fairly well. Signatures don't look the same every single time and we would certainly need more than one sample for comparison. I have seen many Snider signatures with a bigger loop on the S. The slant completely depends on how he held it when he signed it. Besides, the only person to sign more than Duke was Bob Feller. I don't think many would be motivated to fake that sig, let alone ruin a card in the process doing it.

Signatures at the ballpark are always different. I have not studied Sniders autograph much, but I think that you have to look at the circumstances and marterials in this case. I buy tons of early autographs in autograph albums obtained during games and there is variences that you would not believe for "at ballpark" signatures. There was never anything flat for these guys to use so sometimes slant and spacing depends on cicumstances that "through the mail" autographs from the same day will not show. The ink is obviously old and he scrunched his signature to fit the white part so my personal opinion is that this is probably fine.
