In 2009, Legendary Auctions sold the game used base Lou Brock stole to break Cobb's record with provenance from Brock for $13,035. On April 30th, SCP will sell a different base it also purports to be the game used base Brock stole to break Cobb's record--this one signed by Brock with his notation "#893" and, as the catalog puts it, "an irrefutable photomatch."

In the SCP link it shows Lou holding the base in his hands on the day it happened. Neither base up for auction matches that photo. It's evident just looking at the slide/dirt marks on the base. The SCP base looks closer, but it's definitely not "irrefutable" unless I'm missing something. It seems that if these are both respected auction houses then something has to give. Who is right if either?

The one in the SCP auction could easily be the real one. The edge closest to Lou's chest has two skid marks that closely resemble the marks on the left edge of the auction item. Since the picture was taken right after he sole the base all the dirt is still fresh and moist. After years of drying it will lighten up and some will come off from handling. I've seen game used balls look dofferent theday after the game because they dry. On game day they have fresh mud rubbed onto them. By the next day it tends to dry. Sometimes they even darken a bit. But I would put my money on that SCP one...

If you enlarge both pictures that SCP has, you have to rotate the photo of the base itself to the right. Then you'll see alot of matching marks between the photos. I'd go as far as saying the SCP one is the real deal.

I feel worse for the poor guy who bought the Brooklyn Bridge from Doug Allen.

Thank you! Can you post the rotated image together with the auction link?

here's the picture with the rotated base. Sorry, for some reason the size isn't right. I've gotta run now, but I'll get it fixed tonight.

Top of the base in the photo appears bright - dosen't look the same - maybe it's the image shown - if any auction is real - my money would be on David Kohler SCP.

This is one messed up situation. Hope someone can prove which base is real, and something good comes in the end.

I really appreciate the work you did on this. Thank you! Is there anyone who believes the SCP base is not the actual base from the game? |
