94 years young; left us this weekend. I believe he was the last living player to have faced Babe Ruth in a major league game
Walt Dropo, age 87 also left us this weekend but he did not make a major league debut until after WW2 ended. Bad week for baseball indeed Regards Rich |

Walt was a great 3 sport star at Uconn when we were a regional school.
He could've went professional in any of 3 sports but chose baseball. john, |

It stuns a bit each time one of the 'fifties old-timers, the young ballplayers of my boyhood, passes away. They promised us flying cars but all we got was grey hair and a simmering grief for departed mothers and fathers and baseball heroes. RIP Walt Dropo.

Is there a living ballplayer whose career started earlier than Cavaretta's? Rest in peace, Phil ...

Phil was a very nice man. My father, who turned 91 last week knew him from his high school days in the late 1930's. You see my dad with Phil and son Andrew at a card show signing in the late 1980's. Dad greatly enjoyed the visit with Phil. A real class act and will be missed by Chicagoans, though few really remember him.

In the 80's I went on a writing frenzy to all the players from pre-1930 and Walt Drop and Phil Cavaretta were both very graciuous signers through the mail. They will be missed!
