It's a big deal...
Even though the Phillies will be heavily favored to win the NL Pennant, the Reds winning the Central is huge. Before the season started, it was almost unthinkable that anyone could dethrone the Cardinals. Every publication and television show had picked the Cardinals to win, hands-down. It's great that the Reds clinched it by winning at home (rather than via a Cardinal's loss). The fact that they won it on a 9th inning walk-off homer by Bruce was icing on the cake. Would love to see them advance in the playoffs. It will be exciting to see Aroldis Chapman pitch, and see how Votto does in the National spotlight. Go Reds! |

Here's a video of Bruce's home run along with the TV and Marty Brennaman's radio call. I had posted it over in the "water cooler talk" section, but since someone started a thread about it over here I might as well post it again:

Another long-suffering fan here--
When I was growing up as a rabid Reds fan in the mid-1970s it seemed the most natural thing in the world that they would compete every year and win more than their share -- still hard to believe it's 15 years since playoffs and 20 since their WS sweep.... Next year I'll pull for the Reds but also the Mariners, Rangers, Nationals, Royals, Orioles, and the other teams that have had longer droughts-- |

I agree with Tim, it's been a long time for those of us who were around in the 70's and watched the yearly battles with the Dodgers, great memories of that.
Last night was special when Bruce crushed the first pitch of the 9th over the centerfield wall for their 45th come from behind win of the season. There are some I know that believe they (fans and team) over-celebrated for a division championship, but when it's been 9 years without even a winning record, you have to celebrate when you can. Hope they can make a good showing in the playoffs! RC

“I imagine they didn’t get much sleep. The way they were partying, there’s probably a few headaches,” Baker said. “‘They get a day off today but I told them to be ready to go in the game, just in case. Most of them will be back in there tomorrow.” Not to go on an anti Dusty rant since there's enough of those on the Enquirer's website, but this "player's manager" crap is annoying. Isn't it his job and the player's responsibility to be ready for the game the next day instead of hitting up the bars all night? It's as bad as the players that whine and complain about the attendance at the games. When there are people that need to spend their money to pay the rent, buy food and keep the lights on god forbid they don't manage to have enough left over to spend watching people that get paid 2-3 times their yearly salary PER GAME! Hey, if they are too hungover to play why not just give them the day off with pay while you're at it. Of course if a normal person called in to work hungover and expected to be paid for the day off they would probably be fired, but nobody accused the players of being in touch with reality... ![]() Last edited by Doug; 09-30-2010 at 08:35 AM. |

When they still have (or most likely had) a shot at the second best record in the NL and home field advantage for the first round I would think they would be able to prioritize. It's vintage Dusty, letting the inmates run the asylum. I'm no Cardinals fan, but I couldn't see Tony LaRussa wanting his players out channeling their inner Mickey Mantle when they still have something to play for and then giving them the day off as a reward. It would be nice to see them more focused on trying to win a World Series and then there would be cause for some real celebrating.

Well, Ron Gardenhire has played his horrible AAA players all week and let the Twins lose 5 games in a row to the Tigers and Royals with the best winning record in the majors and home field throughout hanging in the balance, so Dusty's actions are miniscule compared to the workings of Gardy's mind. He wants everyone thoroughly well rested and happy for the playoffs. Meanwhile the fans are climbing the walls

Doug - I didn't really mind him giving the regulars one night off but his quote made me question his judgment a bit. I have no problem with them celebrating with a few drinks but the message sent says they drank so much that they had hangovers so bad that they couldn't play, not a good message to our young athletes.
With that said, here's to wishing them the best in the upcoming playoffs and I wouldn't mind a Reds/Twins series at all! RC

Go Redlegs! For a Reds' fan, this has been a great season. Richard, Perezfan, "Bubba," Tim and EDS10, I'm as happy for you guys as I am for myself. I've been a Red's fan since I was nine. I remember watching the all-star game that year when Pete Rose came crashing into Ray Fosse in the all-star game and I've been rooting for the team ever since ...

IMO, Dusty's biggest sin wasn't allowing that to happen (something he couldn't realistically prevent), but in talking about it. Understanding that the press is far more intrusive and likely to write articles about such things than it used to be, it occurs to me that sometimes honesty isn't the best policy and that silence can be golden.

Also in the news is word that the Cincinnati Reds are being investigated for violating the city's ban on smoking. They were shown on TV smoking cigars and five people called the hotline for reporting violations, so now the Reds are being looked into.

Rob, one of my Reds fan buddies pointed out to me that his Reds gave my Cardinals a one week head start at golf.
My Cardinals swept that 3 game series in Cincy, lost the fight, and then went into a tailspin. While the Reds, charged with winning the fight, continued to put on a hitting clinic everywhere they went. Those young Reds players were exciting to watch. |

Even though they blew Game 2, they were up against an awfully good Philly team (and some world-class pitching). The Reds actually progressed ahead of schedule... this was not supposed to be their year yet.
Jockety is a great GM, and with the young pitching + more seasoned players, I believe they'll be even better next year. |

Hey Frank - It was a fun ride while it lasted, wish they would have had a better showing in the playoffs but we knew the Phillies would be tough. Game 2 was the most difficult to stomach though, the Phillies just flat beat them in Games 1 & 3 but that 2nd game wasn't how the Reds played all year.
I missed the fight with the Cardinals by one night, was there for the first game of the series, couldn't believe the slide the Cardinals went on after the series was over. Next year should be fun as well. RC

Hmmm... keeping it pre-war will be quite a bit tougher (but I suppose appropriate for this side of the board).
That limits it to the 1919 winners over the Black Sox and would depend on your "pre-war" definition in order to include the 1940 winners over the Tigers. Excluding post-war eliminates 1975, 1976, and 1990 Reds. How about we bend the rules on this thread and include post-war since it is really an O/T thread anyway? Any Reds from 1919, 1940, 1975, 1976, or 1990 World Series winning teams... If someone posts for the 1990 team, lets try to keep the shine to a minimum and go with more vintage looking cards for them - lest we blind anyone here. Some great players on the 75 and 76 teams to pick from! Have at it! |

Have you read...."RED LEGS and BLACK SOX"....by Susan Roush Dellinger ?
Susan is Ed Roush's Grandaughter; and, she presents a case in her book dispelling the story that the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. But, that the Reds won it "fair & square"....as, related to her by Ed Roush. It makes for an interesting and alternative perspective on this event....as told by a ballplayer who was part of it. I met Susan Dellinger in Cooperstown on HOF weekend 2006. She came to our BB card Show at the VFW building to acquire some cards
of her Grandfather. We talked for quite a while and she had some good arguments to refute the "Black Sox" scandal (as related to her from Ed Roush). She related a story about how some of the Reds were also approached by gamblers. Reds' pitcher "Hod" Eller was con- fronted by a gambler just before the eighth (final game) of the World Series to throw the game. Eller was offered $5000 to throw that day's game. Eller responded with...."if you don't go away, I will would punch you in the nose". I must admit, I started reading this book, but have not finished it. Yes, there is a lot of subjectivity by Roush in recounting that Series events; however, it is somewhat refreshing to get a different perspective of these historic events in the Fall of 1919. Especially, from someone who experienced it first hand. I traded Susan several Ed Roush cards for her book (which she autographed for me). TED Z |

I've not read the Dellinger book, have not heard of it. But thank you, Ted, I'll now seek out a copy, and put in in the stack beside the bed...
Concepcion card... whenever I see one, I smile, because I remember a story I heard back when Larry Bowa and Davey C were both putting in near perfect fielding one season. The two were battling it out with the glove. Just before the Phillies and Reds met in a series, Concepcion made an error. So a day or so later the teams are both on the field as they're about to meet for the first game of the series. Both are out there warming up. During BP and warmups Bowa says "Hi,Elmer" as he sees Concepcion. He keeps speaking to Davey, and calling him Elmer. Finally, Davey says, "Hey Larry, my name's not Elmer." Bowa replies, "I'm sorry, I thought it was, I kept seeing E Concepcion in the box scores and thought the E stood for 'Elmer.'" If it isn't true it should be... |
