I finally fulfilled a promise to my Grandson, Ron. He made a special trip from Maine (he attends the Univ. of Maine)
and we went to the new Yankee Stadium. What an unbelievable structure. I think the Babe would approve of this 21st Century version of "The House that Ruth Built". But, wait a minute....who was the motivating force behind the construction of the original Yankee Stadium ? TED Z |

I think I know the answer, but I had to look it up and make sure so I don't want to cheat.

I don't know Ted if this is what you mean, but I believe the Giants owner kicked them out of the Polo Grounds. I know a Stoneham was the owner but I can't recall his first name.

I'm not too sure what the motivating force meant either, but Charles Stoneham (I had to look up his first name) was my guess since he's the one that kicked the Yankees out of the Polo Grounds.

Oh yeah Charles, all I could think of was Horace, the son.

That was what I meant by I didn't want to cheat, because I had to look up the first name. I was waiting for someone else to guess it first so they could get the credit (if that is the answer).

Charles Stoneham is a reluctant party to the "conspiracy". Ther are two bigger names involved.

I think Babe Ruth is still turning in his grave cursing the name A-roid !!!!! I'm glad you had fun Ted and sure it is a nice stadium, but I still feel like it was a crime against baseball to tear down the house that Ruth built, but at the same time a very American thing to do !

I'm with you on that...I have very fond memories of the original Yankee Stadium (1923 - 1973).

Maybe John Mcgraw was involved?

Huston and Ruppert certainly were the guys who made it happen.
They were the ones who reacted constructively to the "eviction". The "rest of the story" is still out there ? ? TED Z |

McGraw was one of the suspects.
He was green with envy of the Yankees significantly out-drawing his Giants at the Polo Ground and the huge fan attraction that Ruth was. TED Z |

Since I ran out of real guesses I'm just going to assume that the two bigger names involved were the devil and the super devil after watching this

OK, here's my understanding of the events...circa 1920 - 1923. The Yankees, with the acquisition of Babe Ruth in 1920, significantly outdrew the Giants at the Polo Grounds. This drove McGraw "nuts" with envy. That year, Ban Johnson, John McGraw, and Charles Stoneham "ban-ded" (excuse the pun) together to force the Yankees to leave New York and move to Boston. Fortunately, this attempt was aborted. A motivated Colonel Huston and Jake Ruppert in May 1921 purchased a property in the Bronx to lay the groundwork for a Stadium that would exceed the capacity (60,000 seats) of the Roman Colosseum. A year later construction started and on Opening Day 1923 Yankee Stadium opened its gates to the public. TED Z Last edited by tedzan; 09-15-2010 at 09:58 AM. |

That's really interesting. I could only imagine how heated the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry would be like if they were both in Boston!

Interesting thought! Maybe New York could support 3 teams back then but it is doubtful Boston could have if this went down. The Red Sox probably would not have made it out of the 20's trying to compete with old friend and now established Mega Star, the Babe.

That gave me another idea. If the Yankees moved to Boston and they couldn't support both teams would we have ended up with the San Francisco Red Sox eventually?

Well I guess they could have ended up as Los Angeles Red Sox or even worse, the Los Angeles Red Sox of Anaheim.
