Default T205 Mathewson Cycle Still Selling Strong

No one has talked about it for a while now but the T205 Mathewson Cycle backs, despite some members talking about how they are really not that rare, are only showing up about 1 per auction house and still commanding a pretty high price. I would have thought more would have surfaced by now given the set inclusion by PSA and SGC.

I think the only reason you saw them come out in the last couple of auctions is because some people were wanting to take advantage of the hype and make a little money. I do believe you will see them less often as most people will sit on them. I'm not sure of what the pop report for PSA (whatever it says, take one off as mine was crossed over to SGC) has, but SGC reflects only 11 Cycles out of 245 Mathewsons submitted. Compare that with the Wilhelm "suffered" version (Hassan & Cycle) which reflects only 13 (really should be 12 as I know of one that was submitted twice). You don't see the Wilhelm "suffered" come up that often and I would suspect you won't see the Mathewson Cycle that often either.

I think people were trying to play down the cycle variation to try and get it at a reasonable price without all the competition of other collectors. At least we now have a better idea of the going rate based on the last couple sold. It will be interesting to see in the next couple years where this card will fall on the scarcity scale of T205s.

Last time that I checked PSA had 2 cards listed as the cycle variation -- One was a '2' and the other a '3'. These cards have each sold in recent auctions (Goodwin and REA).

Thank you Scott for PSA's updated pop, but unfortunately PSA didn't specify cycle back types until recently. They just lumped all T205 Mathewson's together, so it is difficult to get an accurate count out there. Mine originated in a regular PSA holder prior to them listing it separately. That is another reason I like SGC over the other TPG, they seemed to be ahead of game by listing the various back types.

Any idea on the Pop report for other Cycle backs? What is the comparison to other HOFers?

As noted you can't use PSA pop reports since they did not specify backs until recently.

If a Matty Hindu came up for sale would it command the same price?

Considering that a HINDU Johnson sold for a pretty penny just recently, I'm going to assume that a HINDU Mathewson (if it comes with that back) would also command high dollar.

My bad a better example would be a AB back in black or Green? I would think the pop report would be similar on both of them.

Lee,

I'm sure a true back collector may pay a little premium, but nothing close to what the Cycle version brings. Reason being is that there are 235 other SGC graded Mathewsons with the same stats as the AB back, but only 11 with the incorrect statistics that are on the Cycle.
