Any help indentifying this would be appreciated. This set is complete at 188 images. All but 10 of these are glued to a scrapbook as the title to one of the images states. The firts card/image in the set is Babe Ruth and set includes all the major stars of the 1930's ??. The cards/images are newspaper stock and cut out from such. Thanks ahead of time for any help, Jeff W

My guess on year of issue: 1934-35 for obvious reasons

Never have seen these before. Certainly a neat promotional effort to sell newspapers. How do you know the set is complete @ 188?

I am not sure. The scrap book has 176 images glued to it, along with the loose images (highest # 188) and plenty of pages in the scrapbook, I am just guessing.
Thanks, Jeff W |

The reason I asked was because I was doing some math that didn't work for 188 images but it does work for 190 images. (or a even 200!)
2 images a day = 95 newspapers. Say they were issued 5 days a week that's exactly 19 weeks of daily papers. Using 188 does not come out even for 4-5-6-or 7 days a week! 200 images would be an even 20 weeks of daily papers.

I do not remember the exact items but I do own a Gehrig and a Klein for this set. I want to say it was a Detroit publication but not sure.

The pittsburgh set is stated to be complete at 208 from 1936. My guess is this is similar but 1-2 years sooner. Any more help is appreciated, JEFF

A complete set of these newspaper scrapbook cut-outs were auctioned on eBay a few years back by one of the major dealers. He knew exactly what they were and had a nice write-up, I already had a couple in my type set, so I didn't placed a bid. A few weeks after the auction ended, the high bidder broke-up the lot and sold most of the cut-outs individually while making a nice profit in the process. It was a tough blow for me since I'm always looking for stuff to flip, but I'm now a better person for it (yeah right!). Of course, being a good boy scout, I wrote down the details of the identity of these newspaper cut-outs.
Alas, tragically I was only a boy scout for a few days, so after spending 2+ frustrating hours looking for that info I have reached a dead-end. I know for a fact that the cut-outs numbered higher then 200, but that is all I can add at the moment. Lovely Day... Last edited by iggyman; 04-20-2010 at 09:58 AM. |

If you can ever come up with any more from that sale it would be greatly appreciated. Even if you could remeber the dealer that sold it as maybe I can contact them to get more info or maybe online they have an archive.
thanks, Jeff W |

Just went through Columbia City Collectibles for another issue and stumbled upon the answer. They have some of these on their website.
Thanks for all who helped, Jeff W |
