I think KO mentioned their existance in a SCD article, and just saw a Gelman
advertisment selling a bunch in a 1980 Trader Speaks. Has anyone heard of these? Have scans? etc.... I will get a scan of the one I have or think I have.... Thanks in Advance, Mark mrios@hotmail.com **The advertisement is from Richard Gleman in The Trader Speaks - Sept 1979, pg 41. Interesting that the 57T proofs are all numbered in the #300 series (up to #404). And that the 57T paper proofs are priced the same as the 70T Cloths..? I've never heard of them, but proofs can come in various forms and often on stock different than the final issue. I've even seen Topps proofs on aluminum and plastic film.

I have one 4 panel of the 67s that Dave mentioned, from the same source as I recall. But have not seen others, except for the Topps "cards" in those 2 Sports Illustrated magazines from 1954

I have a 66 and a few 67s
They're probably out there for most years in the 60's, maybe 70's too. Steve |

On the Sports Illustrated cards mentioned by ALR, the back is actually flipped 180 degrees from the standard issue cards. Just an observation. Can't help you on the '57s

Except for the 12 Yankee "proofs in the 8-23 issue, but only because they had no actual counterpart standard. ;-) There were also paper Topps replicates in 2 of the 55 issues---8/16/54 8/23/54 4/11/55 4-18-55

I never recall seeing Gelman's ad in the old TTS, nor ever hearing about a 1957 Topps paper proof.
These appear to be the "high number" series. It's logical to assume the entire sheet was proofed in this format, and each may very well be unique. Mark, if I can lift your scans, I'll consider listing these in the Standard Catalog (unpriced). What issue was the Gelman ad in?

Bob,
Not a problem at all - to include the pic(s) and info in the guide. As for the Gelman ad, if you need a complete scan, let me know. Thanks, Mark mrios@hotmail.com |

Bob,
The Gelman ad was in the Sept '79 issue of TTS, pages 40 & 41. Mark |

I'm not inclined to catalog the various blank-backed paper proofs as the scope of their issue is undetermined, i.e., which series are known?
The back printing makes the '57 paper proofs a special situation with a cachet that the 1960s' don't have.

I would think the blank back ones would have been made for every series over several years. It's just one part of Topps proofing process. Which ones survived might be tough to pin down.
Maybe a mention that they're known to exist? Then again, that would leave it open for all the acetates, color process proofs etc, so probably not. The 57's are special. probably a later step in the process to check if the right backs went with each front. Topps did a lot more proofing than the shop I worked for in High school. Does anyone have a good feel for what proofs were made in what order and why? I've got acetates, maybe a color process proof, a small proof sheet on cardboard, a small proof sheet on thin stock, these paper proofs, and a blank back proof on slightly nicer stock than the regular cards. Seems like a pretty complicated process. The place I worked for I think did only a photographic mock up off the masks. Steve B |

1970 Topps cloth sticker or 1971 Topps greatest moments. Which would you choose? I wonder how many people made the wrong choice.

I just realized Gelman's ad has seven 1970 cloth stickers that do not appear in the latest Standard Catalog checklist.

Spalding's Guide had 66 1970 Topps Stickers in the set listing, altho' he does not provide a checklist. Whatever the final count is, I'm sure it's divisible by 11.

Many, but not all of the 1967s have a dot between name and position. If you search 1967 Barry Moore and Tom Haller on Ebay, you will find none of them have a dot on the card. My Cardinals team set has 18 with dots, and 6 without.

You may be on to something there. A quick glance at my partial Cardinal team set shows that the first series is missing the dot but the higher ones have it.
