GOD Bless Stan.
Stan is one of the nicest ballplayers you would ever meet signing at a BB card show. I think this 1947 Bond Bread card is his 1st nationally issued card. ![]() TED Z |

Todd posted my favorite - the 53 Bowman. 7 batting titles. 3630 hits. And, a great guy.

The greatest player I ever had the pleasure of meeting. He stopped half way thru signing this and said to me, "Ya know, I really love signing in red but I almost never get the chance." After that he signed his last name and winked at me as he slid it across the table. Great person.

You're still the man, Stan. The last image is a page from a circa 1950 Sport Magazine ...

Nice stuff, Jerry.
Amen, Ted. Mr. Musial is a gentleman. He played in the first major league game I attended, in 1963. Once in a while I dig out Mr. James' first Historical Baseball Abstract, and I read what he wrote about Mr. Musial. It is a true shame that modern players can't attempt to emulate Mr. Musial, on the field, off the field, in their home life, and for us fans at the signing table. Mr. Frick had it right... baseball's perfect knight. |

As a kid in the early 1950's, some in the sports media were critical of Stan "the Man", saying that he wasn't a power hitter. Stan
hit 475 career HR's. In fact (if I recall correctly) a NY sportswriter persisted with this criticism. The Cardinals were playing a doubleheader. So, Stan decided to show his latent power that day. He hit 2 HR's in the 1st game and 3 HR's in the 2nd game. That stunned sportswriter (nor any other) ever again questioned Stan's hitting power. Anyhow, this was never Stan's style of hitting and he continued being the great hitter that his teammates knew of him. Regards, ole buddy. TED Z |
