The Stage was a weekly theatre magazine published in Philadelphia. In the summer of 1889 they ran a series of supplements featuring "The Stars Of The Diamond" that included 14 Players from the Philadelphia & New York teams. Four of the players are in uniform,(Keefe, Ward, Ewing, Stovey), the rest in street clothes. OldCardBoard has a section about this set on their website and Lew Lipset wrote an article for VCBC #10 titled "The Stage: Obscure Issue Discovered"
I scored these two issues of "The Stage" Magazine on Ebay this past week for a fraction of what they usually go for. The Standard Catalog lists them for $75 in VG, Oldcardboard lists them at $185 VG. Both supplements are still inside and the magazines are intact. The players are Harry Stovey and Charles Buffinton (or Buffington). I haven't received them yet, so the pics are from the auctions. The "Broadway" overprint on the pics are not on the actual magazines/supplements themselves Front cover: ![]() Supplement: ![]() Front cover: ![]() Supplement: ![]() Last edited by NewEnglandBaseBallist; 06-19-2009 at 03:19 PM. |
