I posted this topic on another board a few months ago and thought it would be worthwhile to add it to this board too.

I love old baseball photos as well as cards and found that Corbis and Getty had alot of the photos that Topps, Fleer and Bowman used for their cards.

Those are terrific photos. The 1958 Mantle/Aaron was always one of my all-time favorite baseball cards.

Judging by a few of my contributor statements Corbis is more than happy to sell you images for under a buck

One of the most effective "one-two" punches in the post-war BB scene was Allie Reynolds starting and Joe Page finishing.
Especially, in the 1947 and 1949 seasons. Page consistently could come into the game in the 6th or 7th innings and totally
shut down formidable opposing teams such as the Red Sox or the Dodgers.

A 6:3 tall Southpaw from the mountains of Pennsylvania, Joe Page was the greatest relief pitcher I ever saw (over a short span).

The 1949 Bowman cards of Paige are found with light and dark green background colors.

Photo from 1948 Cleveland Indians team photos used by the Bowman Gum Co. to create their 1949 card.

especially the way the card companies would redraw or colorize the image for the card.

By the way Bobw do you have a studio shot of Jackie Robinson similar to the Hodges and Reese? Or one from the team issued photo pack? Could you post them?

Sorry, Mike I don't have a photo of the Robinson. I do have the team issued picture packs from 1941 and 1946 ?. I sold my 1947, which has Robinson, at the last Reading show.

Here's an photo that looks strikingly familiar to one of the most famous baseball card images. What is remarkable is that this image dates from 1946, seven years before it showed up on the Bowman card, which looks like it was taken just moments before or after ...

I remember hearing that it was Don Zimmer sliding under Reese on that card, but since that Sunday newspaper section is from 1948, that would eliminate Zimmer as the sliding player.

All through my collecting years that '52 Bowman of Newcombe looking in for a sign is one of the ones that has stuck out for me among so many others that are engrained in my mind's eyes. Seeing the original photo is such a treat. Thanks!

Check out the photographs used on the 1952 and 1954 Bowmans of Don Newcombe. The same guy is standing in the bleachers in both photos. And he gets cropped out on both cards! The pictures were clearly taken just seconds apart ...
