1919 cover photo - who is it? Hal Chase?

Does anyone recognize the players? One knowledgeable board member suggested that the player in the air might be Hal Chase. Perhaps others have more information. This is the cover photo for a terrific 1919 Graflex Cameras brochure, Thanks.

The only way it could be firstbase, is if the runner had just hit a single, but rounder the bag slightly. The fielder then throws to first for a tag.

Had the same initial reaction here -- that the negative was reversed. But if it was, then that can't be Chase, a lefty. It it wasn't, then that does look rather like Chase, but that is one odd-looking baserunning event.

Perhaps so, this photo shows Chase in an identical leaping pose....but, from an opposite perspective.

What about the possibility that it is Chase, and whoever produced that overlaid another photo of a baserunner... put on there not to be realistic, but to balance the image?

The fielder's image looks sharper than the base runner's, to me. When I first looked at it, I perceived that that runner was closer to the 'camera' than the fielder, there would be no collision. But the runner has his hand out. And their shoes are about the same size. The fielder's head looks bigger.

I think the images of the 2 players are from different photos. And that the composite was put together to balance the image, with no concern about the images being realistically positioned.

Agree here as well -- good thought, Frank. In fact, with that idea in mind, now we're pretty sure the whole background has been subbed, too, or both the Chase and baserunner images dropped in over some anonymous bland background. What, shrubs and a billboard but no grandstand along the 1st-base line toward home?

When I first saw the image, I just figured the runner was heading back to first to avoid being picked off. I also figured the photo was staged, so I never questioned the runner's presence. Brian's photo and Frank's photo look like they were taken just minutes apart. It kind of reminds me of the classic Pee Wee Reese pose from the 1953 Bowman set. You can find variations of that photo taken from different angles. I presume everybody agrees it's Chase. Great find, Brian!

Yep. I used Sax so I wouldn't have to look up how to spell Knoblauch.

Also could have used former Giant catcher Johnny Rabb, but Chase would need a step ladder.
