Good pickup on the Walsh card, Scott. I bid on that one a bit. Would have bid a bunch more if I'd had faith that that border coloring would have soaked away. Let me know if you bust him out for a soak!

Getting off to a fast start for 2009. Got these in the mail (some might be from the last few days of 2008) and have a few more incoming.

Rob,

That is a great card! (Now, just sit back and wait for Lichtman to buy a PSA 7, later this month.)

Damn, Rob, that is an incredible card. And yes, I hope to see another one in an auction soon (preferably in a higher grade at half the price).

Leon:

That postcard with the Bottomley really makes that pickup a sweet one. I have seen a couple other patent cards from the '33 Goudey set, but none accompanied by such an excellent piece. Congrats!

Someone has to go next, but that trio of E107's is one tough act!! Nice !

I will sacrifice and post behind you, Brian T. and lob an easy one to beat over the top.

When I put this in my lousy scanner I swore it was a PSA 10, but, it looks like it would struggle to get a SGC 10:)

Enjoy!

Brian T, interesting to see the 1903 CY young image is the one they used for the 1909 E90-1 card...

They used that Cy Young image several places. Among them are one of the W600 Sporting Life's, Fan Craze, One of the E90-1 (as you said), the M116 Sporting Life card, and I think the artists used that portrait as the basis for the T206 card too. They just changed the uniform to match the proper team.

Yes, Dan, please more info on Alexander strip.
I think you may be freaking out some of us "Strippers."

Alexander is #9 in the W516-1 list (correct alignment), BUT the reversed image you have (W516-2-2?) his him listed as #2.

Odd, but strips never surprise me anymore ............ happy.gif

i know it's not pre war but my only pick up so far, technically it's a nm 7, i will make believe it's 1985 and call it nm/mt! what a gem, saved thousands because of 5% or so centering, will take that trade every time. classic case of buying the card. amazing up close. the streak by the left border is my scanner, not the babe!!

Okay...now I'm confused. I bought the Alexander as a W516-2-2, but the card number is wrong. The SCD says the W516-1-2 are printed only in black, red and yellow so this can't be from that set, and it can't be from the W516-1 set because it's reversed.

Any ideas?

dan- when i had mine i got it in the early 90's at white plains, the dealer said it was from an either un-known strip or from a box bottom that had other athlets???? i never really did my homework on it.

Interesting Marty. I had him down as a W516-2-2, but I guess I'm going to have to put him in my UNK category.

Thanks!

Dan, yours is a W516-1-2 despite what SCD says in the book, the cards are found with other colors in the printing (although less frequently).

A common misconception with this series is that the reverse images are W516-2's. The checklist (or # on front) is what determines if a card is W516-1 or W516-2.

All W516-1 Alexanders are #9, all W516-2 Alexanders are #2.

Next you determine if regular or reverse image...

Regular image on front with handwritten wording:
W516-1-1 (not sure why it is only referred to as W516-1 in the SCD--it should have another "-1" at the end)

Reverse images and handwritten wording:
W516-1-2
W516-2-2

Regular images with type-written wording on front:
W516-2-3

Reverse images with type-written wording on front:
W516-2-1

Hope this helps
-Rhett
