E95 and E96

I just completed an E98 set and am looking for the next challenge. I am seriously considering the E95 and E96 sets. From reading on the Old Cardboard site, they appear to be series one and series two. Could you all please give me your opinion on card availability, cost, scarcities, toughies, etc.? I am looking for a set(s) that is obtainable in lower grades. Thanks for sharing.

I think both sets are great to go after, fairly easy to complete and certainly obtainable in lower grades. Personally, I feel the E95 set is a nicer set to complete due mainly to the player selection. E95 has Cobb, Wagner, Matty and Plank - not to mention other HOF'ers such as Collins, Evers, Bender, etc.

Hi Jeff,

The E95 and E96 sets are fairly easy to complete. E95 is a lot easier than E96, but much, much more expensive. E96 has a mack and lajoie as the main money swallowers and tinker, baker, and jennings as mid range hofers.

I've completed each set (e95 twice) and E98 is tougher than both.

A friend of mine needed an E96 McQuillan to finish the set for quite a while, but really no card is tougher than the others like we find with E98, E97 and others.

This seems to be a great time to go after these two sets. They've fallen a bit in value which I really like. I even saw a cheap wagner in one of the auctions that ended last week. Maybe I can upgrade mine one day!

Both sets are really attractive though. It seems that Phila. Caramels really could afford a nice product. You don't see a lot of errors with these, but you do see a TON of staining with E96. Not so much staining on E95s. The E96s must've been packaged closer to the caramels or they were offered with a messier candy product than e95.

Congratulations Jeff on completing the E98 set! Any completion of a set is quite an accomplishment. My hat goes off to you! The E95 is a really nice set to go after next. I like the rich, darker tones of colors that it has. I don't really care for the E96s because the players all look like they are made up to be on the Vaudeville stage with make-up. Anyway, I think one of the most difficult and expensive cards in the E95 to find and purchase is the Plank. Good luck with your new collecting goals.

Aside from the cost of big name HOFs, in terms of sheer availability, E95 is probably the easiest caramel set to complete. There are some great and unique cards in the set including the Cobb which is a real classic.

P.S. I couldn't forgive myself if I did not mention that the E93 set is another comparable great one. It is the best looking E set in my opinion and is full of HOFs in the 30 card set. It is a bit tougher than E95, and probably a tad easier than E98. There are a few images, like M. Brown, that are identical with E98 except for the backgrounds.
