Does anyone know if there is a checklist or a way to determine specific year(s) of issue for each player?

You can start with this thread and then maybe do a quick search for W590 in our search area..I am not sure of the exact dates but would think you would just need to look at player/team combos to get an idea......good luck

The boxing cards issued on the sheets of these offer some clues as to dates. Benny Leonard and Jack Dempsey are listed as champions. Leonard retired and Dempsey lost in 1926, so I've treated the cards as 1925 or 1926 issues. Not sure how we get the timespan on the issue; looking forward to seeing the analysis here.

There are two distinct printings of these. The first in 1925 and the second in 1931. Many, but not all of the first printing cards were updated in the second series. There were no new players added in the second series. The best way to determine which printing your card is from is by the team in the caption. A couple general rules - if it's a minor league team or the position has been updated as "Former" as in "Former Catcher", it's from the second series. The second series cards are much more difficult to find than the first. Much of the checklist in SCD is based on a meeting I had with Bob Lemke at the old Richmond show about 5-6 years ago where I showed him my collection. He wrote a subsequent article in SCD and added a half dozen cards to the checklist. I think I still have one or two more in my own set that are not on the checklist.

Hi Andy. Any idea which printing this Gehrig came from?
And what is the likelihood do you think that the W590 issue in the future will be described in reference material as two seperate printings as you suggest, and not simply a range of years that is all inclusive? Does the standard catalog care, or are strip cards so off the general radar that their history and origin are not considered overly important?

Thanks,

Daniel

Does anyone have the GC Alexander with "House of David" as the team? It is my favorite and Ive only seen it 2-3 times (once pictured in the SCD around 2000).

It looks like 16 of the 43 players in the set have variations. 27 of the cards look to have had no changes from 1925 to 1931, thats why it would be tough to break the set into 2 sets.

Frank,

I'm the one that had the House of David Alexander and reported it to Bob Lemke. He wrote a whole article about that card and the Tris Speaker Newark variation (not mine). Sadly, I traded it away to another board member. I believe he still owns it and has no plans to sell it. Hopefully, he will read this and be coaxed to post a picture.

I will post a scan of the Speaker Newark variation tomorrow when I get my scanner hooked back up.

Here are both versions of Tris Speaker and Heinie Sand. I posted the Sand variations to show an example of a "Former" caption.

This is a neat little set. I took an interest in it and began collecting it not too long ago. Fortunately there are several board members, such as Andy Cook, who were willing to share information with me regarding this issue. Because of the generousity of a few individuals, I've been able to get pretty far on a Series 1 player set and thought I'd share those cards with you all.

Forgive the small scans, I had to get these all on an image that wouldn't stretch the screen and that would meet the maximum Net 54 image size requirements.

A couple things I've noticed - like Andy says, the 1931 series tends to include minor leaguers and players with "former" in the caption. However I've noticed some other differences in the cards. If you look at the group I posted below, I believe all these are from 1925, you can see that the captions are inconsistant. Some of them are centered at the bottom, others are seperated into the left and right corners. There's several little nuances in the captions that you can spot if you look close.

Here's an example - look at the Quinn and Rommell cards in the 4th row. One lists him as playing for the Philadelphia Athletics. The other as "Philadelphia A." The font on Rommell's card is slightly heavier too.

Another font example is the two Burns cards. One is heavily bolded, the other is much lighter.

Another obvious difference I've noticed is that some of the cards are pure black and white photos while others seemingly have brownish/sepia overtones. Any significance to that difference between the cards?

Hope this little "gallery" helps someone out there with their research. I don't have any of the 1931 series variants unfortunately but this group is only missing a Cobb, Ruth, Johnson, Hornsby, Gehrig and Spencer for completion.

Can anybody tell me what team Hornsby is portrayed on in this set? Are there any team variations concerning Frisch or Hornsby? Thanks.

There are some awesome golfers in the set as well. Here are two Bobby Jones variations and one Walter Hagen. The "Golf Champion" Jones was printed on much heavier card stock.

Do we know if the Lou Gehrig card was issued in only 1925 or only 1931 or during both print runs?

Here are both versions of Frisch, and one of Hornsby. There is also a Hornsby Boston version. For Frisch, the Giants is the first series and Cardinals is second. It's possible some of the first series cards were reprinted in the second without any caption changes. I once tried to catalog the cards by paperstock when I had about 60-65 of them, but I couldn't tie any one paperstock (there appeared to be more than 2 paperstocks) to any one series in particular.

Hornsby played for Boston only in 1928. Doesn't this suggest that there was an intermediate print run in 1928, or maybe early 1929?

It's possible. Assuming an intermediate print run, we would expect to find at least some of the following cards (team and years played for them):
Alexander (Cardinals 26-29, Phillies 30)
Bancroft (Dodgers 28-29)
George H Burns (Yankees 28-29, Athletics 29) - Burns has a "Former" card showing him with the Indians, his team from 25 to early 28
Carey (Dodgers 26-29)
Cobb (Athletics 27-28)
Gowdy (Braves 29-30) - Gowdy has a Former card showing him with the Giants, his team in 1925
Gray (Browns 28-31) - a series 2 of Gray may exist???
Hornsby (Giants 27)
Kelly (Reds 27-30)

One other thought on the Hornsby. The checklist shows it as Boston. I've never seen one however. Maybe Boston is incorrect--speculating. Can someone please post a scan of a Hornsby other than the one shown above?
Thanks,
Andy

I second Phil's ponderings .

Does anyone have any idea/evidence of whether the Gehrig card appears in one or both of the printings from this issue?

Daniel
