A Tough Card?

I was wondering if someone could tell me if the 1914 Cracker Jack Chance is a tough/scarce card? And Pop. Reports for PSA and SGC. Any help would be appreciated!

Ryan - SGC pop reports are free. Without looking it up, I'd guess the combined SGC+PSA pops for the card is about 40.

I dont think the E145-1 Chance is any tougher than any of the other E145-1 cards.

The reason it is more desirable (higher value) is because #99 Frank Chance is only found in the 1914 set, he was replaced by #99 Hal Chase for the 1915 E145-2 set. 1914 cards are far tougher than the 1915s because the 1914s were only available in boxes, and the 1915s came in boxes and as a complete set through the mail from the company.

it seemed like for a few years this card didn't pop up at all- and then, as is typical, 6-7 changed hands in a short amount of time. For a lot of us it's one of the 23 or so variations from the '15 set, and as such a bit more desireable than many of the rest of the '14 set.

Most folks just look at 1914s and 1915s separately.


A few old collectors just worked toward 176 cards, and the year didn't matter.



1914 cards are more difficult to locate than 1915 cards, although the prices don't really truly reflect that. I think that lack of price difference is because few people actually collect all cards of each year. The reason for the difference in availability is set out by fkw above, and is explained in Mr. Lipset's encyclopedia.


The 1915 cards from 145 through 176 have a bit more demand, because the 1914 cards stop at 144.


And if you get a copy of Mr. Lipset's excellent Vol. 2 of his Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, he has a list of the 1915 cards that are different from the 1914 numbers. In that, the 1914 card #99 depicts Frank Chance of the New York Americans; card #99 in 1915 has Hal Chase with the Buffalo Federals.

So the answer is yes, the Chance card is a bit tougher than normal.


And the pop reports aren't of great value in ascertaining that.
