Chicago People - The National - and the Cubs?

I am heading to the National this year, and was thinking I might like to catch the Cubs game on that Saturday.

Anyone interested?


Any Chicago people able to help organize such a day out?

I live in the city, one mile directly west of Wrigley. I'll help out in anyway possible.

I plan on going to the national, but maybe just for one day and a few hours. We shall see how much money I have to spend at that time.

Good luck getting tickets. Cubs sell pretty quickly, and with the National there, others will be thinking the same thing. I want to go again as it is a beautiful stadium, but if I don't get the tickets soon, I might be screwed.

Any Chicago area folks here agree, or am I way off on this?

Last year in Cleveland, it was a sinch though the attendance was pretty packed.

Usually the games are sold out, but I always have pretty good luck hitting up the scalpers (getting 2 is easy, 4 can be a bit tougher), I have always scored lower deck reserved tickets for around $20 each (I come in from Minneapolis to visit my friends in Chicago).

Here is how I work it:
Goose Island Brew Pub is down the street. Enter the establishment 2 hours before game and enjoy 2 or 3 beers (leave with about 30 minutes till the game starts). Pay your bill, ready your pockets with cash (20's in your front right pocket, 10's in your left and 5's in the back) and exit the establishment.

To the right you will see Wrigley field and a bunch of guys selling tickets, the first guy is going to be the highest price he will want $40 bucks + each...this is where your acting classes will finally pay for themselves. If he has a bunch of tickets you will be able to offer less since he has to sell a lot of tickets in 30 minutes. Usually I will cut the asking price in half; he will probably laugh at you, but thank him and just walk away. He will chase you down and counteroffer before you get to the next guy...tell him, “sorry man, I only have $20 for each ticket,” and he with take the offer or you start over with a new scalper. A little patience and little liquid encouragement is all it takes.

With the National and trying to get 4 or more tickets together will raise prices a bit, but I'm not too picky with where I sit so I might have better results. I’m probably not going to be attending the National, but if I do I will go to a game on Friday or Saturday.

sean, you hit that right on the money.
i live in the chicago burbs and worked (vendor) at wrigley when i was younger. that is the ONLY way to buy tickets for cubs games. if they get really hot, you may have to pony up a bit more cash. also weather is a factor in price.
the only thing i would add to what sean said is: drink more and earlier and then shop the scalpers for the best seats. this means, go to the box office....get a floor plan, then go hit the scalpers. they will be there and normally supply outweighs demand.

I agree Andy, more beer and earlier is better, but I think the game starts at noon ...plus you feel like you're saving money when your tasty Goose Island is only $5 compared to $7 Bud.

Heck I might just have to come for the game.

bob, the upper deck should be fine. it can be very cold if the wind is blowing in....but that shouldn't matter in late july.

sean, noon games are a bit tricky......paying attention to baseball is tough if you don't sleep the night before.

One possible way to obtain tickets other then scalping is to check the website the night before the game or the morning of the game. The Cubs always hold back a block of tickets that they reserve for the visiting team (player's wives and employees), Cubs employees, Cub's wives and families, VIP requests they may receive, etc. These tickets are typically great seats. To the extent that these tickets have not been requested by any of the parties I previously mentioned, the Cub's many times will sell them the day before the game or the morning of the game on their website or at the box office. They will not be available on the website or at the box office until that time. Therefore the game may appear on their website as "sold out" all week and if you check the morning of the game suddenly tickets are available. Additionally, you may show up at the box office and no tickets are available at 9:00 a.m. but suddently at 10:00 a.m. great seats are available. The only downside to this method is that it does not allow much planning time or you may make the trip all the way to wrigley field and not get tickets. Although I have used this method many times, there is no guarantee that tickets will be "released". I live 5 blocks west of wrigely field so it is a convienent method for me. If I hang out at the box office in the morning and can't get tickets it only takes me 10 minutes to walk home or if I get tickets online an hour before the game starts, I can get there in plenty of time. However, if you are staying out in Rosemont and get tickets an hour before the game starts, it would be tough to get there in time. However if you get tickets at 10:00 a.m. and the game starts at 1:20 p.m. you will be fine.

For anyone who knows they will be in the neighborhood, I would be happy to provide a one day parking pass to the first 10 people that contact me which will allow you to park in the neighborhood a few blocks away from the park on the street versus paying $30 for parking.
