In 1981 Podres gave me a baseball at the old Met in Bloomington. I was ten at the time. From that time on I've thought he was pretty damn cool. As I grew older and realized that he stuck it to the Yanks in a Game 7, I thought he was even cooler. I still have the ball. It's not even recognizable as a MLB ball anymore due to it's being my neighborhood ballgames's favorite to play our games with.

For a long, long time I've called my dad 'Podre' or 'Podes' with is a cross between padre (Spanish for father) and a Johnny Podres Topps card I happen to have at the time I coined the nickname. I used to call mi papi "padre" until he made the mistake of walking by me when I had a Podres card in my hand ("Hey Podre"). Rather silly, but it stuck. Naturally, mi madre se llama "Modre."
