E91-A back....(1908 issue).......






For unexplainable reasons, "Socks" Seybold is one of the tougher cards in the E91 set. His career ended in 1908, and he
is one of 10 players that are not found in the T206 or T205 sets. Some of these players, finally, do appear in the 1912
T202 and T207 sets.

Here are the other nine......

Jimmy Archer

Charlie Chech (career ends 1909)

Tom Hughes

Sam Leever

Amby McConnell

Danny Shay (career ends 1907)

Alan Storke (career ends 1909)


And, most notably.....

Harry Hooper....HOFer....St. Mary's College graduate with a Civil Engineering degree....The E91-C is his 1st BB card.


Joe Wood....1908-22, 116-57, ERA=1.91 In 1912 led AL 34-5....3-1 in WS vs Giants....The E91-C is his 1st BB card.

Can be any and every Joe Wood or Harry Hooper BB card from whatever issue.....there really aren't that many of them.

It's really a big mystery to me that these two great players were not in the early Tobacco issues.

Perhaps, there's some truth to my speculation on the "Candy-Tobacco" wars regarding certain BB players during the 1907-1911 era ? ?

Hey Leon,

Quick question on the image you posted.

I noticed the photo was done by Underwood and Underwood, who also are represented on the images of the 1921-22 Big Show Candy cards. Perhpas there is connection between the two?

thats an intersting Hooper strip card. If I'm not mistaking he never played on the A's? Am I missing something? Being a Huge A's collector, ecspecially for HOFers on cards depicting them as A's I'm dying to know if that is truly THE Harry Hooper and if it is, do you knwo why he is said to be an A?

That strip card of Harry Hooper is a W514 (issued in 1919). Hooper was with Boston (AL) in those years.
So, identifying him with the A's is an error.

Thank You for clarifying that with me, I thought that was the case but being fairly new to vintage you never know what kind of story is behind which card and everybody here has ALOT more knowledge than me so I thought I'd ask, either way I now know this card exists and have moved it near the top of my wantlist for this year,

That is right, Dave. Cancelled from back when they did perforated cancelling. I bought that several years ago, with the hope that Joe would make it into the Hall one day. That day has yet to come. And I figure his best chance has gone.

From his own words.....Joe Wood relates "one of the biggest days of my life".....May 24, 1918

"My biggest thrill came one day in 1918, shortly after they gave me a chance in the outfield. That day we beat
the Yankees, 3-2, in a game that lasted 19 innings. It was at the Polo Grounds, the same ballpark where six
years before I'd won three World Series games as a pitcher for Boston. But now, as an outfielder for Cleveland,
I hit two home runs and the second one came in the 19th inning and broke up the ballgame."

This paragraph is an excerpt from Joe Wood's interview in the THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES, by Lawrence S. Ritter

This event was late in Joe's career when he couldn't pitch anymore. His arm was never the same again after his
amazing season in 1912.....see initial post here for the stats.

Amazingly Frank, my bank does not even have copies of most of the cancelled checks cashed against my account anymore; more often it's just a line entry and there is no image or anything shown on my (online) statement. There will not be treasure troves of cancelled checks discovered 70 years from now for todays athletes.

Years ago, there was a display in the lobby of the Empire State Building done by Ripley's Believe or it Not and they had a copy of a large metal check "Cancelled" with a machine gun on display.

Love that check signed by Joe Wood......I think it is one of the safer ways to collect old timers'
autographs. I have a few checks of old BB players, also.

Frank, I know that you know....but, for others....Smoky Joe was destined for the HOF, but after
his amazing 1912 season he fell breaking his right thumb and injuring his arm and shoulder. Even
though his won-lost record continued to be fine (1913-15), his pitching performance was deter-
iorating as he developed serious arm trouble.

He was sold to Cleveland for $15,000 and switched to playing the outfield. Ended up with a .283
Batting Average (which is higher than a lot of present HOFers).

I'd like to see him in the HOF, too. Gentleman Walter Johnson once credited Smoky Joe's fastball
to be as fast as his.

I am Hooperless but have plenty of SJ Wood items. For the one or two guys left in the world who haven't seen my autographed M116 it's over at Paul M.'s site. The Horner cabinet was auctioned by Mastro last spring. I was not the lucky winner. Anybody know if there are any more out there? The TSN Wood is not technically a card, but you guys are cool with that, right? Also posted is a photo of the Yale baseball team, circa 1930, Coach Joe Wood, at end left, back row.
