T206 pops - PSA website - confused

For example, SMR magazine lists only the 3 Mathewson cards, dk. cap/white cap/portrait.

But now on PSA website there is listed a myriad of Mattys. Looks to be based on front AND back combinations - but then there are larger pop numbers of each as other line listings. If you add up the specific back pops they do not equal the larger pop numbers. And do the larger pop line listings represent ALL of a certain front?

What do you folks make of the pop numbers?

PSA has only recently decided to list the backs along with each player for T-206's. But for the cards already graded, they are just leaving as is.

So say they graded 100 of a given card, without noting the backs. Then 5 more come in, let's say 2 Sweet Caps and 3 Piedmonts. There would be 3 lines for the same front of the card:
100 general
2 Sweet Caporal
3 Piedmont

They do not add up to anything; the largest sum is the total before they broke out by card back.
