Guys,

Once again, it is time for scans, and your top 3 catchers of all-time. They use to call catching gear, "the tools of ignorance," but if you were to pick an all-time team it would be smart to pick catchers first simply because it is a key position and there are darn few greats. I would start with, the Black Babe Ruth, Josh Gibson. No. 2 is Johnny Bench. No. 3 is Yogi Berra.

Jeff - While I agree that Peter has many OT posts and should try to keep the topic on vintage cards, it is also quite borish on your part to continue to post rude and juvenile attacks on him. Check your posts, rather than discuss cards, you appear to be obsessed with Peter.

Richard - I believe the Lombardi comes from a set that was put out by the Reds over 2 seasons, 1938 & 1939. Chris can correct me if that is incorrect.

I picked up 2 on the BST not too long ago. (Bucky Walters and Linus Frey)

I don't mind Peter's posts, some of them are interesting. I think others may be more welcoming to them if Peter was to contribute to the thread, rather than just ask a question or request pictures. Start a thread and contribute your thoughts, pictures, research, analysis, etc.

I don't have any images to post to this catcher's thread, but sure wish I had a Josh Gibson to show.

The Lombardi comes from the 1938-39 W711-1 set, which I believe was issued by the team. Here's another catcher from the same set, Willard Hershberger. For those who don't know, Hershberger filled in for Lombardi when the big guy got hurt during the Reds' 1940 pennant drive. After making a costly error in a game the Reds lost, he killed himself. With Lombardi ailing, the Reds put coach Jimmy Wilson in the lineup, and they later won the World Series ...

Yogi and I in Cooperstown a few years ago. Shortly after this pic, I had a chance to sit down with Yogi and Whitey Ford for about 15 minutes worth of baseball chat. Both guys were polite, gracious, knowledgeable, and great. I am not a big Yankee fan but I am huge catcher fan and loved talking to Yogi.
