A search turned up very limited information on this issue...
can anybody provide history, distribution info, etc?
Are these truly rare, and if so, why?
Any & all scans would be tremendously appreciated (and envied, as well)!

They are pretty rare, much more so than Colgan's Chips.

For example SGC has graded 8 total compared to 35 Colgan Chips.

Of the SGC graded 7 different players with Reulbach having had 2 graded.

My SGC 50 McGuire is the highest graded of the 8 with no equal

The Robert Edwards 6-10-1995 Auction sold a complete container with a Christy Mathewson JuJu Drum as lot number 537 if you want to see what the little package looks like. I get a scan up later if you want or maybe Rob has the color scan on file somewhere.

Mark they are check-listed. Through 2006 45 had been so. Because of the rarity it is not known whether the checklist is complete. You can find the checklist in the SCD Standard Catalogue.

As to rarity, I am going to go out on a limb and say that the SGC pop reports are not a good indication of how rare these are. In my time in collecting I will bet I have seen at least 2000-3000 Colgans Chips either in person, at Shows, or on ebay. In that same time period I have probably seen 10 JuJu Drums and owned 3 of them. That gives a rough estimate of 200/1. I bet the odds are more like 100-150/1 because there are small hoards of these in collections that I dont know about, but there are also large hoards of Colgans as well. These are extremely rare.

in 10+ years of trying I got to 6, still have 4 as I recently sold a board member a PSA 8 Pelty, still have Chance, Speaker, Coles and ?? can't recall the 4th off the top of my head. The neat thing about the JU-JU Drums are that many different poses are used not commonly found on other cards, the Chance for example is a full length action pose.

Only seen one in person and only a few in auctions.
The one I did see was Harry Cheek (gotta love that name). Lipset, in his book on caramel cards, had the Cheek card as being reported to exist but with lack of visual confirmation was in parentheses as unconfirmed. Hey Lew, it exists...........kick myself in rear every time I get in and out of the shower for not buying it.
