N54 - The Ultimate Dumb Question

Having spent the last number of years as a student/collector of pre-war stuff and enjoying these Boards during that period a simple question dawned on me today that I didn't ever here or have seen brought up here; and maybe this one's for Leon:
Why "Network 54" ? What's in that particular name; and how does it relate to pre-war?
