Paul, about the Ypsi postcard.
Bought it at a paper and postcard show in Davisburg, Mi about 25 years ago. Funny thing I did not even see it, my young son tugged on my sleeve and said Look dad Ty Cobb. He learned about Detroit and cards at a young age. He was with me on many finds from the older days. No writing on the back. No other information about why Ty was there with the team. Must have been some game though, with the uniform and all.

Just wondering if it's an Ypsi team or the game was played at Ypsi High since there is an O on the uniforms? Any idea what the O is for?

Here is the first ever animal mascot card I can think of. Circa 1907-08 Michigan Wolverines RPPC issue of the the team captain with the original Michigan Wolverine. Issued about the same time as the Dietche postcards John posted, but very, very scarce.

I thought that when I saw it too. Looked like a Wolf to me or something but maybe it was the closest thing you could get to a "real" Wolverine in Ann Arbor Michigan.

I suppose it would be awfully hard to tame a wolverine so the dog will have to substitute. Actually I don't think it was unusual to have a dog as a college mascot back then...in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it were the norm.

great postcards Max... even if the setting is not the Astoria

on the bottom postcard.... the kid holding onto the fence in the first row of the stands... that is priceless.

The written message on the reverse side reads: "Saw a peach of a game today. New York won from Boston (Am. League) 1 to 0. Saw Collins but he didn't play." The year of the postmark on the card cannot be made out but the date & time are August 14 @ 1 AM. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 1-0, on August 13, 1914. Ray Collins was the ace of the Red Sox staff that year, winning 20 games, although he did not pitch in the August 13 game. The card was mailed to Keene, New Hampshire; Collins was a native of Vermont.

So if the game reference is correct (and it appears correct), that dates the card to 1914 at the latest. Ruth was 19 in 1914 and appeared in 5 games for the Sox that season, so I doubt that is Ruth in the postcard.
