Default Are the 1904 WG2 Fan Craze cards considered true Baseball cards?

Greetings, I would like to know if the 1904 Fan Craze Baseball cards are considered true cards? They are game cards and I was wondering if most collectors consider this set significant? For instance, are there any cards that are considered rookie cards from this set? Also, what is the difference between the 1904 & 1906 sets? How are they distinguished? Look forward to some opinions from my fellow vintage card collectors.

They are real cards - but I think that some collectors dont value game cards as highly as they would t cards or e cards.

Josh, I agree with you there. They do not seem to be very popular. Were they issued in 1904?I think they are cool looking.Prices are not very high on these cards.

Not high compared to their T or E counterparts, but they certainly aren't "cheap" either.

Hello, I read that also. However, based on team designations for the American League set in particular Willie Sudhoff, it was 1906 for the American League set. He is depicted with Washington. He played with Washington in 1906 his last year.

Hello, another card from the 1904 Fan Craze set is Lave Cross who is depicted with Washington. He played with Philadelphia in 1904 and 1905. Seems like some of these American League players or maybe the entire set was issued circa 1906.

Literally, they probably aren't trading cards, as trading cards are supposed to be designed to be collected. I'm not sure that a boxed deck of playing cards was designed to be collected-- though that point could be debated. Whether or not a game card or playing card from a deck is a trading card is a tougher call, tougher than whether or not a stamp or matchbook is a card.

Some collectors consider them cards, others don't. There is no definitive answer. You need to decide for yourself.

Both the American and National League games were issued in 1906, not 1904.

They are not true baseball cards. They are game cards. But with all game cards that show many different players, they are highly collectible, just like postcards, pins, premiums, felts, etc. Thats why they are grouped with baseball cards and collected the same way. The Fan Craze cards are far scarcer than many "T" cards and you cant beat the large portraits for a nice way to pick up an early HOFer for a couple hundred $$.

I'm simple-minded: made of cardboard, catalogued in the ACC, PC sized or under, shows a ballplaye, definitely a baseball card.

Hello, I am not sure if these are made of cardboard or plastic because they are game cards. I have never owned one so I don't know. Maybe someone who has one can tell us if they are cardboard or thin plastic.

I believe that most plastics had not been developed by 1906. Certainly nylon stockings came about around 1940.

Here is my Mullin, I also have Barrett and Donovan, need Crawford to complete Detroit set. They are cardboard, not plastic.

Hi, I agree with these guys regarding the Fan Craze set. The pictures certainly are beautiful. They are the classic Horner photos used in most of the popular sets of the day. Great thing about this set is that it predates all of the caramel issues of the era. Only the E107 and some of the W600 issue are older. They don't seem to be very popular among most collectors though. I noticed a nice lot on ebay and only 1 sold. I think bacause they are game cards and they were specifically designed for that purpose many collectors do not consider them TRUE baseball cards. I say if you like them collect them. After all, there are no rules for Baseball card collecting and that is what I like about it. You can collect whatever you enjoy. I just picked up my first Fan Craze (Sudhoff) PSA8. I want the card for my type collection.
