I've begun collecting T202s and I'm curious as to how the players on the side panels were chosen and why the cards seem to have an unrelated photo in the middle. Any thoughts as to the reasoning behind the makeup of this very unusual and interesting set?

The players on the end panels are always teammates. Beyond that, I'll leave the rest of the info to Lee, Brian H or others that are more knowledgable

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

Jay is right with a few (notable) exceptions the players are teammates.

Exceptions include McGraw/Bresnahan and McGraw/Jennings, who were teammates well before the set was issued. Also many of the teammate combos are batterys (Catchers and Pitchers) and the New York teams are well/over represented.

Hi Jeff,

There does not seem to be much corilation between the center panel and the end panels for about half the cards. All the managers are on the Just Before the Battle, bender on the Bender panel, Wheat on the Wheat panel and other examples. There are quite a few that the center panels portrait more than one team on the end panels. I have not ever heard any explaination of why this is the case.

Any other questions about the set feel free to ask. If you are looking for cards higher than EX than are spendy but most of them lower can be had at treasonable prices lately.

Always looking for more collectors that have not given me there front/backs of their T202s. Thanks to all the have given so far.

when the cards were issued were they honestly meant to be seperated ? , i have found many seperated on ebay before. maybe the mfgs were thinking this also, so then created essentially 2 types within the card. just my thoughts. nice set tho!

Lee, Jay and Brian, thanks for the info. I find this set to be so peculiar and interesting that I'm surprised that there are no contemporaneous notes or writings about what went into the creation of the set. I think the Cobb Stealing Third card, with Cobb's famous slide in the center panel, one of the most incredible cards I have ever seen.
