I thought this was interesting, the seller could not get $700 a week ago for this card, but a similar one goes for around $2500 on REA and all the sudden it's a $2000 card.

It is always interseting how the perspective of the value of a card can change and the why it might be good to use a big auction house such as REA to sell sometime.

For unusual/obscure items, many collectors want it to be recognized/identified by a respected hobby source before they pay good money. Perhaps because they have been burned before by dubious claims by sellers, they want a published source to list the item as legitimate. Recognized/identified can include being listed in a price guide, appearing in a major auction and being the subject of an article in a respected magazine. An item being sold in a REA auction, with description in the print catalog, is the equivalent to the item being listed/priced in a major price guide. The print catalog can be referenced just as the price guide can.

The majority of collectors are not full time experts, and consciously depend on price guides and related publications to see what is recognized as legitimate. They feel that these guides are a more reliable source of information than their own weekend collector experience. Whether or not a 2001 or 1925 card is listed in a price guide directly effects what they will buy. Once an item is listed in Beckett the demand will increase.

I would also venture to say that there are a number of big spenders in the hobby that don't have the inclination to spend a lot of time on ebay, so they don't see the good stuff that comes along there.

Well, I was the high bidder on this card when it ran on eBay last week, so I'll throw a thought or two in on why it went for less than the REA example.
At least for me the one on eBay is much less desirable than the one in REA -- though still very cool. The one in REA had made it through an additional step in the printing process (white ink), which makes it a much brighter, more appealing card. The one on eBay also has a heavy crease and has been trimmed for the PSA holder -- all the black/yellow ink cards that I've seen have had a slightly oversized cut.

Plus of course what others have said -- there's the extra exposure and gravitas that an item in a major auction naturally gets.

I do prefer the eye appeal and coloring of the REA one (whiter coloring).


And with the coloring aside, if any card takes in $2,500--- what would the same card with a big crease going through it fetch?

looks like maybe the original eBay high bid was right on track for that card. I bid on the original eBay auction but I only went as high as $450. Thought it might go as high as $600-$800

It is only my opinion, but I believe that the ebay Matty wasn't Trimmed...Unless you count the worker who took it home for scrap as the originator of the trimming!? The Card was bought from a Lew Lipsett auction before PSA produced their present holders, Years ago! Anyway, It took me 4 times to get PSA to slab it! PSA didn't know what to do with it, when I just wanted them to authenticate it. I think missing the white stage confused them... I do think that both cards are beauty's though. The ebay Matty will end up with a very well known T206 collector - who is very excited about the card! Just thought I'd add a little bit of what I know about it! "See all you Roundin' 3rd", Denny

I bid on the card you won and noticed a huge difference in the two. I think still you got a very interesting Matty piece of history for a fair price.Hope you enjoy the card as much as I would having won it!

but how did you win it if it was offered again for the 2k plus????
it is the exact same card according to the scan and serial number.

It's not "gravitas" that drives these prices up on Mastro, REA, etc.
I bid on this Matty card on Ebay, as I noticed you did.

It's simply...."COMPOUNDED MATH"....every 10% increment on the bidding in
these major auctions causes the starting price to DOUBLE every 7 bids; and,
by 14 bids the initial price has QUADRUPLED. This, to me, is unacceptable,
and this is why I will not bid in these major auctions.

You really cannot beat Ebay when it comes to their "simple" bidding format.
