New levels of vintage price insanity?

Is it just me, or does it seem like vintage card prices have taken another huge leap higher. A few months ago, m116 wagner blue backgrounds in the 3-4 range were selling for 3000-4000. Now that is apparently the going price for the pastels:

I have the same sinking feeling. As a bidder on that lot and with the prices of recent sales of the blue Wagner in mind, I actually thought I had a chance to get it for about $1K less than the actual price. I fear that we have indeed reached a new level of insanity, and there is no looking back. Oh, to have gotten into the pre-war cards a few years earlier......

I actually thought 1500-1600 would be about right for this card - of course it was already higher than $1600 two days ago. I cant wait to see what the sgc 40 e93 wagner goes for - it ends tonight and is currently at 1900+.

I have noticed that all Wagner stuff seems to be climbing.

I think we talked about this a while back and were saying that Wagner stuff should be on par price-wise with Cobb stuff... so it seems to be happening.

Of course, I dont think it is just wagner cards. T222 Alexanders have been going crazy lately as well - 11 or 12k for a psa 5; a psa 4 is now over 3k with a few days left; etc.

I think there are a lot of examples of this with players other than cobb and wagner.

I myself have been wanting to buy an M116 Wagner, so this is horrible news. I suppose it's possible the Nagy collection designation had something to do with the price realized.

Lots of well-heeled collectors are getting into the vintage aspects of the hobby, lots of real estate money is sloshing around making people feel richer than they might otherwise feel, and lots of long-time collectors fearing a price rush are reaching for cards at the edges of their budgets in the fear that they will be unaffordable in the near term. I think the latter is the most significant factor driving low-grade and mid-grade sales to new heights. I can't afford $10k for a 7 but I could reach and pay $1k for a 3, and I better do it now before the 3 moves up another $500 is how the thinking goes. I've purchased cards in far worse conditions for far more than I would have thought possible recently.

I was at a show recently and overheard some dealers complaining about how they had so much cash available but nothing to purchase in the vintage field.

This kind of price just might flush out other M116 Wagners. Maybe we will get an idea of a true value if this just happens to be an anomoly. So was the M116 Cobb Pastel SGC 50 "Nagy Collection" that was snatched up at $1,550 a bargain?

If, as someone said earlier, Wagner cards are now on par with Cobbs, then that M116 Pastel SGC50 Cobb was an absolute steal. I don't think the SGC pop report distinguishes between the blue and pastel Wagners, but both would appear to be pretty scarce cards. Still, I hope you are right that the Wagner auction encourages more people to part with their M116 Wagners (and Cobbs).
