M116 Sporting Life question..

If M116's were released in 24 series of 12 cards each, why is a set considered complete at 287 cards (not including variations)rather than 288 ? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I can't seem to figure it out.

I don't believe there's a cataloged #61 or #280 in the set yet. I could be wrong.

Ahhh. Tim and I are working on that and other musteries of the set for an article for Old Cardboard. Lyman has shown an incredible amount of patience as sometimes life gets in the way of our love I understand Tim has a rough draft written and I have been busy accumulating pics and old pubs and other info so together before long we might have something ready to turn in.
If you look at the SCD for 2006 you'll see Wiltse listed as card #280 but, yes, there is no #61 listed.

Alan- Tim pointed out to me that an awful lot of the past documentation regarding which cards are from which series and has been used and copied and sworn to over the years is flat out wrong. Hopefully we can shed light on this and try to correct some glaring discrepancies.

i have one of the sporting life ads which list ALL series by player and there are indeed 288 diff players with no double prints that i could see. i imagine there is a numbering problem in the SCD book.

Yes, as Scott says, there are 24 complete series of 12 cards each, which means the catalog in question is numbered wrong somewhere. Then there are the variations, which means that a master set would be AT LEAST 326, but really more--

You'll have to wait until Bob and I get our act together to learn about all the many many other mysterious features of the set

Not only does the SCD book list the set as 287 cards but so do both the PSA ans SGC set registrys.

That's weird about the SCD catalog saying 287-- they must have just missed one, and never corrected it. The set registries probably just went from their mistake. I'll let someone else figure out who's missing from the lists.

But there are definitely 288 different pictures, not counting team changes, background and back variations. Scott B. has all of them, I think. Tbob is about 15 short of complete, I'm 36 short. There must be a few other complete sets-- I wonder how many? Anyone else have one complete?

Lipset's article in issue #6 of VCBC is the most complete source of info. But Bob and I will get something out eventually that adds some stuff to it.

i spent about 15 minutes looking over the numbering and players but could not find the omissin or error?

i do have all of the known card including variations as well as the Seymour, Baltimore. which by the way is how he is listed on the large Sporting life ad that i have for them.

somehow, i feel after your article i may be lacking something?

Sometime back in another Thread the M116 set came up. I had mentioned
that I had a 90 % complete set. Unfortunately, I was offered a lot $$
for it at the Philly show several years back and of course I took the
money.
So, I cannot provide you much of an input at this point. But, I have a
question. I am quite sure I had 29 (or 30) different BLUE background
cards and some where I have recorded them; however, either Lipset or
some other source has catalogued only 24 in the set. Is my recollection
wrong, or are there more than 24 Blue cards ?

I believe that there are only 24 cards known with the blue background, all corresponding to one of the 12 specific series of cards.

I think Harry is right-- as far as we know, there are only the 24 pictures in series 1 and 2 that come in blue backs.

There is no missing card. A fellow hobbyist explained that this has been covered in some of Lew Lipset's earlier literature and is fairly well known by many of the more veteran collectors.

Looks like both Series 20 and 22 contain Walsh, Philadelphia (NL) -- same photo with slightly different background color.
