M101-2 ad backs

I own a few M101-2's that are blank-backed. I am aware that some of these prints have advertising on the back. I did a little research but was unable to locate any specific information relative to what is printed on the back and in what ratio these these ad-backs are found compared to the blank-backed variety. Any information or guesses would be appreciated.

I have seen 2 and they were both Zimmerman. I don't know if they are a special issue or regular issue.

Here's one I found recently on eBay (within the past year, if memory serves). This M101-2 of Art Fletcher is marked as being from November 1913, however the ad back reverse offers a 1916 Sporting News Record Book along with a "set" of 75 supplements, a "set" of five of the 1915 postcards and a book called a Reday Reckoner.

Odd, in that there were six postcards in the 1915 set (this offer doesn't include the Eddie Collins) and there were 100 M101-2 supplements from 1909-1913 (not 75).

Interestingly, this supplement has envelope fold marks and may have been sent out as a promotional offer. My guess is they had quantities lying around of some, but not all, of their previous promotions and supplements and were packaging them up in 1916 to entice new subscribers.

Perhaps, Lyman could do that with some of the "old" cards he has "lying around" to entice new Old Cardboard subscribers !

Why on earth does the ad mention Bill Carrigan and Hans Lobert and Heinie Zimmerman, rather than Mathewson, Johnson, Alexander, Cobb, or Wagner?

Those three players are shown in-hand at top of the ad. Why they selected them is another story!

I'll bet they were the first three someone grabbed from a stack.

Interestingly, the Lobert and Zimmerman supplements were issued in 1913, Carrigan in 1910.

Here are two styles:

The first does seem to accompany the Heinie Zimmerman photo (dated Oct. 30, 1913). The other is on the back of Frank Schulte's photo (dated March 2, 1911), and has fold marks, as the previous poster mentioned.

i have a Speaker, a Joe Jackson, a Joe Wood and a Ban Johnson--all blank backed. I didn't know there were any with ad backs!

Almost none of the M101-2s have the ad back-- I own two and have seen two or three others, including the scan in this thread. So your own blank-backed M101-2 are not deficient, not to worry.

I just noticed the two similar ad backs have different wording. In addition to identifying the three player images and some other assorted wording changes, the second ad back also mentions the "Case At The Bat" poem!

I wonder why and when they changed the backs, and which came first?

Also, how many colors did they come in?
